Salesforce.com Announces Force.com for Amazon Web Services, Extending the Benefits of the Cloud to Even More Businesses

New tools enable developers to bring together multiple cloud computing services for application
Salesforce.com customers, developers and partners can now use Amazon S3 and Amazon EC2 in
their Force.com applications
[NYSE: CRM], the enterprise cloud computing company, today announced a new offering, Force.com for
Amazon Web Services, to extend the power of cloud computing to even more enterprises.
With Force.com for Amazon Web Services (AWS), enterprises, ISVs and developers can build powerful
new business applications and run them entirely in the cloud, leveraging both the database, logic
and user interface features of Force.com and the storage and compute capabilities of Amazon S3 and
Amazon EC2 services. Through Force.com for AWS, developers can access these services from within
the Force.com platform to build applications that seamlessly span both clouds. The
capabilities made possible through Force.com for AWS will accelerate the creation and adoption of
new kinds of applications in the enterprise that take full advantage of cloud computing.

Connecting the Clouds with the Force.com Toolkit for Amazon Web
With the new Force.com Toolkit for AWS, developers can easily harness the power of Amazon S3
and Amazon EC2 to create compelling applications that run completely in the cloud. For end users of
these applications, the integration of Force.com and AWS means that applications can be powered by
both systems while providing a seamless user experience. Force.com for AWS includes:
- Force.com tools for Amazon S3: The first integration between the Force.com
platform and AWS is around the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). With this integration,
the Amazon S3 service is made available 'natively' in the Force.com environment via the creation of
an Amazon S3 toolkit that wraps the Amazon S3 API and access methods and makes them directly
available within Apex code, the Force.com programming language. Amazon S3 and its operations
would be able to be included in Force.com application flows in a discrete and semantically rich
fashion, including the ability to automatically add, remove or modify Amazon S3 objects based on
workflow and data changes in a Force.com application. For example, developers could use this to
build applications that require storage of large amounts of unstructured data, such as images,
video, log files, or email backup.
- Force.com tools for Amazon EC2: The second integration is between
Force.com and the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). Using Amazon EC2, developers can
extend their Force.com applications with existing programming languages, such as PHP or Ruby, or
pre-existing executables and libraries. This toolkit is represented by pre-built Amazon
Machine Images (AMIs) that have the full context, including language runtimes, configurations, and
connections to associated API libraries, necessary to extend Force.com. Developers can use
Amazon EC2 to simply instantiate the AMI and immediately begin development, without any additional
configuration or installation procedures. The first AMI being made available is to use PHP with
Force.com, with others likely to follow.
