Sustainability
At salesforce.com, we view environmental responsibility as a core value, and we applied these same principles to Dreamforce.
The conference center
The Moscone Center is known nationwide as a leader in energy efficiency, recycling, and environmentally-friendly design. The center sits in the heart of San Francisco, with convenient access to local and regional mass transportation. Moscone also has one of the nation's largest municipally-owned solar-generation installations.
Salesforce.com is working with Moscone in several areas to make Dreamforce more sustainable.
- Energy efficiency: Moscone uses alternative energy and energy-efficient lighting. In collaboration with Moscone and our vendors, we pledge to power down computer and other electrical equipment at night to conserve energy.
- Landfill diversion: On-site recycling and compost stations will divert most of the materials at the event from the landfill: food, utensils, serveware, paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum.
- Food and beverage: We have water stations throughout the venue to prevent the use of disposable plastic water bottles. We pledge to incorporate local food into conference meals and to donate leftover food to local food banks. As always, we’ll use biodegradable or recyclable serveware and utensils.
Salesforce.com at Dreamforce
The environmental impact of Dreamforce was a big consideration in planning this year’s conference. We are taking many steps to ensure that Dreamforce is more environmentally-friendly than ever before.
- Less printing: Our marketing campaigns are almost entirely conducted via email, and we are keeping printed conference collateral to a minimum.
- More responsible printing: We will print necessary materials with soy-based ink on recycled paper.
- Paper goods: We are using biodegradable name badges, cotton tote bags, recycled paper pens, and compostable coffee cups.
Exhibitors
We’re working with our exhibiting sponsors to reduce their environmental impact at Dreamforce.
- Giveaways: We encouraged our partners to provide materials that are recyclable or biodegradable, to distribute materials online, and if printed materials are necessary, to use post-consumer paper and soy/vegetable-based ink.
- Electricity: Partners should power down all monitors, computers, and electrical equipment during non-expo hours.
- Recycling: Our recycle and “pack it in, pack it out” policy encourages exhibitors to minimize printed materials and recycle all packing materials such as cardboard, boxes, and wrapping paper.
- Donation: After Dreamforce, reusable items like excess giveaways and signage were donated to local nonprofits. Exhibitors can donate leftover items by simply affixing a blue donation sticker to them.
Attendees
Your participation makes all the difference! Here are some of the ways you were environmentally responsible while attending Dreamforce.
- Valet bike parking: Ride your bicycle to Dreamforce and take advantage of curbside outside Moscone South's upper lobby, courtesy of salesforce.com and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. As a thank you for helping us lighten the carbon footprint of Dreamforce, bikers can enter a drawing for cool prizes including a commuter bike. For more information on our eco-rewards raffle, see the public transportation page.
- Public transportation: We encourage Dreamforce attendees who are not staying in nearby hotels to use public transportation to and from Moscone. Show your Muni or BART ticket to a bike valet outside Moscone South's upper lobby, and you can enter a drawing for cool prizes including a commuter bike. For more information on our eco-rewards raffle, see the public transportation page.
- Paper reduction: Our paperless resource center and online surveys will help reduce unnecessary paper consumption.
- Recycling and composting: By putting materials in the correct bins, you’ll support our goal to significantly reduce the amount of trash that goes to landfill. In the expo hall, please only take the collateral and giveaways that you need.
- Hotel and travel: Luckily, San Francisco has plenty of hotel options that are a short walk or a quick bus or subway ride to Moscone. Several hotels also offer many sustainable amenities and eco-options.
- Volunteer: At the Dreamforce volunteer event, hundreds of conference attendees—plus salesforce.com employees, families, and friends—spent a day working at the EcoCenter at Heron's Head Park, San Francisco's first environmental education facility that is also a 100% off-the-grid building.
