Chatter overview

1. What is Chatter?

Chatter is a brand-new way to collaborate at work. Because status information about people and important projects is automatically pushed to users, Chatter makes it easy connect with the people and information they care about most.

Chatter is already making a big difference in businesses around the world. At BCD Travel, one support rep went from closing 10 cases a day to closing 40 cases. Saatchi & Saatchi electrified the organization by getting better insight into its creative projects. Rewards Network was able to make work fun and engaging again, while giving management better insight into how the company is doing. And revenues at Schumacher Group are growing at a staggering 30% annual rate with Chatter.

2. Is Chatter secure?

Because Chatter is built on the Force.com platform, it benefits from all Salesforce security features. The sharing model and user permissions apply to Chatter, so users can see the same data they can see in the application. For example, sales users can only see their own accounts or those belonging to people below them in the role hierarchy. However, all users can see all profile information and posts.

3. How much does Chatter cost?

Chatter is included at no extra cost for all editions. Chatter is also available to non-Salesforce users for $15/user/month. This paid Chatter license includes the Salesforce content library, the ideas and answers features of Salesforce CRM, read-only access to accounts and contacts, and the Force.com platform.

4. Do all browsers work with Chatter?

Most current browsers work just fine with Chatter. Internet Explorer 6 is not supported and Chatter will not work with that browser. We recommend that you upgrade any users from IE6 to a newer browser.

5. How does the new Salesforce skin (user interface) work with Chatter?

By activating Chatter, you automatically activate the new Salesforce skin, which was made available in the Spring '10 release. This skin will not work with IE6, so we recommend you upgrade any users still using this browser.

6. How is Chatter different from social media tools?

Chatter uses a lot of the same paradigms that you see on sites like Facebook and Twitter, however, Chatter is completely secure and completely private. At the heart of Chatter is a feed with all of the things you choose to follow, like people, groups, accounts, and opportunities. You are in control. Chatter is not an app for monitoring other social media sites, like Twitter or LinkedIn.

7. How is Chatter different from other business collaboration apps?

There are several differences:

  • Collaboration happens in a business context. Users can collaborate around specific business situations, as represented in Salesforce CRM by opportunities, accounts, and cases. Other collaboration apps can't do that.
  • Chatter is built on the Force.com platform, so customers, developers, and partners can leverage feeds, profiles, and updates right out of the box. That makes their applications stickier and more collaborative without any extra coding.
  • Chatter takes advantage of the security, sharing model, and reliability of Salesforce.

8. Is Chatter a new feature or a new application?

It's both: Chatter is a feature in that it makes other applications built on Force.com better—for example, by adding feeds, profiles, and status updates.  Chatter is also collaboration application in its own right that lets an entire company collaborate in a single place.

What does Chatter mean to me as an admin?

9. What does Chatter mean for my users?

Chatter will help them collaborate on deals and projects. Because it automatically pushes updates to users, they’ll always know what's happening with important deals, projects, and information.

10. How much work is it to turn on Chatter and administer it?

Once you turn on Chatter, create tabs in the application, and enable records for users to follow, it's no extra work for you. Chatter will not affect your customizations and it works with the same security rules that govern the rest of your Salesforce org.

11. Can I set up Chatter for just a few of my users to try it out?

No. Because Chatter is an org-level switch, you have to turn it on for everyone or for no one. Chatter is much better with everyone using it to share knowledge, expertise, and content.

12. How does Chatter work with my company’s Salesforce customizations?

Chatter will not break any of your customizations.

13. How does Chatter work with integrations with other apps?

Chatter can integrate with other apps through the Chatter API, so users can see data from any custom or third-party apps you integrated with Salesforce. That means users can have updates pushed to them from SAP, Oracle, SharePoint, Google Apps, and many other apps.

14. Does Chatter impact Salesforce performance?

Chatter will not impact the performance or uptime of your Salesforce org. You can check out security, privacy policies, and system performance at trust.salesforce.com.

15. Can users get Chatter on mobile devices?

Chatter Mobile is currently being piloted, so talk to your salesforce.com rep on how to participate. To see the latest features for Chatter, visit our release Web site.

16. What’s the most important thing I need to tell my users?

Stress that Chatter is a business application that’s completely private and secure, and that is to be used only for business purposes. Remind users not to post anything they don't want their managers to see. The Chatter etiquette link lists specific do's and don'ts.
