It probably involved a lot of grunt work, right? If you started in finance, you probably searched through endless documents. If you were a junior attorney, you prepared simple legal briefs. And if you were a software developer, you wrote boatloads of basic code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ap\/artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> has automated so many of these tasks, will entry-level jobs go the way of floppy disks?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depends on who you ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/05\/28\/ai-jobs-white-collar-unemployment-anthropic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">predicted<\/a> that AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within the next five years. And Aneesh Raman, LinkedIn\u2019s chief economic opportunity officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/19\/opinion\/linkedin-ai-entry-level-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cThere are growing signs that artificial intelligence poses a real threat to a substantial number of jobs that normally serve as the first step for each new generation of young workers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other outlooks aren\u2019t so dire. More than half (58%) of executives in a recent Slack <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/intl\/en-sg\/blog\/news\/the-new-ai-advantage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Workforce Index<\/a> expect to hire <em>more<\/em> entry-level workers. The unemployment rate for recent graduates in the U.S. has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.signalfire.com\/blog\/signalfire-state-of-talent-report-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risen 30%<\/a> since September 2022, compared with 18% for workers overall. Even highly credentialed engineering grads are struggling to break into tech. As one commenter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/GenZ\/comments\/1e4stlb\/our_generation_is_so_cooked_when_it_comes_to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a Gen Z Reddit group, \u201cOur generation is so cooked when it comes to professional jobs.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is worrying for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-11-15\/ai-replacing-entry-level-jobs-could-break-the-career-ladder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several reasons<\/a>. The system that\u2019s been in place for years served essentially as an apprenticeship: Recent grads did menial work in exchange for experience, as well as the wisdom, guidance, and mentorship of older workers. It\u2019s how they learned the ropes \u2014 not to mention workplace etiquette. When the bottom rung of the career ladder is broken, young workers don\u2019t get this guidance. And it\u2019s not only entry-level jobs that are at risk. Vista Equity Partners CEO Robert F. Smith recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/vista-ceo-tells-superreturn-attendees-ai-will-take-your-job\/492825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> a conference that \u201call of the jobs\u201d currently being carried out by the world\u2019s 1 billion knowledge workers will change because of AI. But there\u2019s good news, too: The World Economic Forum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/the-future-of-jobs-report-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">predicts<\/a> that even though 92 million jobs will be displaced by 2030 due to a number of economic macrotrends, including AI, 170 million new ones will be created.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<!-- Parallax Container -->\n<div class=\"parallax-container\" data-parallax-speed=\"0.5\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n\t\n\t<div class=\"parallax-summary\" style=\"opacity: 0; visibility: hidden;\" data-summary=\"As AI continues to reshape the job market, colleges and universities are navigating how to integrate this technology into their curricula. But now, Murray said, \u201cuniversities are still determining how to embrace both the opportunities and ethical considerations that come with embedding the technology in their curriculum.\u201d Some colleges prep students to work alongside AI; others restrict its use.<\/p>\n<p>Liv Gutierrez, a junior at the University of California, Berkeley, was surprised when she started an internship at Salesforce this summer and found that AI was not only allowed, but encouraged. An economics major, she said her college restricts AI use, and that professors use tools to detect whether students use it for homework. But Gutierrez\u2019s classmates used AI to study, and she started doing the same earlier this year. \u201cI think you have to be open-minded about AI and accept that this is the new reality, and you either move forward with everyone else or you get left behind,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For every school that\u2019s restricting AI, others are embracing it.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-more-schools-offer-ai-programs\">1. More schools offer AI programs<\/h3>\n<p>As AI becomes more prevalent in the workforce, universities are starting to embrace it and prepare students for careers. They\u2019re offering more AI-focused classes and access to AI tools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/22\/colleges-that-offer-bachelors-degrees-in-ai.html\">number of schools<\/a> throughout the U.S. also offer AI degree programs, including Stanford, MIT, Purdue, and Berkeley (yes, the same school Gutierrez attends). In 2024, the University of Pennsylvania became the first Ivy League school to offer an AI degree.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-carnegie-mellon-leads-the-way\">2. Carnegie Mellon leads the way<\/h3>\n<p>Many of these schools are following in the footsteps of Carnegie Mellon, which offered the first bachelor\u2019s degree in AI in the U.S. in 2018. Its <a href=\"http:\/\/coursecatalog.web.cmu.edu\/schools-colleges\/schoolofcomputerscience\/artificialintelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coursework<\/a> covers computer science, statistics, computational modeling, and machine learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A class called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcii.cmu.edu\/course\/human-ai-interaction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human-AI interaction<\/a> examines ways to use AI that are \u201cbeneficial and useful to people.\u201d Students can also take part in independent study projects about using AI for positive change, in areas such as healthcare, transportation, and education.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-ai-native-universities\">3. AI-native universities<\/h3>\n<p>California State University announced this year it was making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/07\/technology\/chatgpt-openai-colleges.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ChatGPT available<\/a> to more than 460,000 students across 23 campuses. That\u2019s true at KPMG: Recent graduates there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-12-04\/ai-could-shave-years-off-path-to-partner-at-law-firms-big-four\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">handling tax work<\/a> previously reserved for staff with at least three years of experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI is helping newer employees punch above their weight,\u201d said Lucas Puente, head of research at Slack. \u201cIt gives them the insights and support they need to take on work that used to require years of experience.\u201d Slack research backs that up, showing that 83% of daily AI users are comfortable using the technology to perform tasks outside their skill set, especially millennial and Gen Z workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But companies are still nurturing talent the traditional way, too.
