Yet surveys also show that most of us think that these disruptive technologies are primarily going to affect someone else\u30fcsomeone with a skill set or an educational background that lends itself to repeatable work. This is a risky assumption on everyone\u2019s part, including mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI and robotics aren\u2019t just for everyone else to think about. The robots are not only coming \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.briansolis.com\/2021\/05\/wtf-whats-the-future-podcast-when-it-comes-to-safety-and-security-robots-and-people-become-co-workers-with-travis-deyl%E2%80%AAe%E2%80%AC\/\" target=\"_blank\" adhocenable=\"false\" rel=\"noopener\">they\u2019re already here<\/a>. But that doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re all out of a job. It means that we need to explore opportunities for ourselves and our teams to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/human-automation-future-employee-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" adhocenable=\"false\" rel=\"noopener\">humanise the future of work<\/a>&nbsp;to complement and even enhance AI, automation, and productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Salesforce, we recently invited award-winning New York Times technology columnist\u00a0<a adhocenable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinroose.com\/bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Roose<\/a>\u00a0to discuss the impact automation is likely to have on our lives and jobs. Roose shared that AI and automation are already changing the way we work \u2014 particularly for highly-educated, white-collar workers, whose everyday jobs are already evolving thanks to AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><b>Predicting the impact of automation technology on the future of jobs<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the course of research for his book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinroose.com\/futureproof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Futureproof: 9 Rules for Humans in the Age of Automation<\/a>,\u201d Roose found that for hundreds of years, we\u2019ve been predicting what machines can and can\u2019t do \u2014 and that usually, we\u2019re wrong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few examples to his point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI can state flatly that heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible.\u201d \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceworld.wolfram.com\/biography\/Kelvin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lord Kelvin<\/a>, 1895<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThere is no prospect whatsoever that the employment of electronic digital computers in the field of translation will lead to any revolutionary changes.\u201d \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yehoshua_Bar-Hillel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yehoshua Bar-Hillel<\/a>, 1962<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cYou won\u2019t get the best seating or the best fares \u2026 what happens if you just press the wrong button?\u201d \u2014travel agency owner quoted in a 1984&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/07\/09\/business\/airport-ticket-machines-gain.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;article on the first automated ticket machines at airports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The disruptive technologies that would prove each of those predictions wrong went on to reshape economies and workforces forever. Yet at the time, each statement reflected widely-held beliefs. In the early 1980s, for instance, people were very skeptical that computers would ever meaningfully replace human travel agents. That changed quickly with the advent of travel-booking websites, which gave consumers direct access to making arrangements without a travel agency rep or the associated fees. Today, it\u2019s a lot more likely that you use online sites to book everyday travel, except when using a travel agent is mandated as a workplace policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><b>Where AI is changing the job landscape<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although many of us still think of robots on the assembly line as the typical agent of job displacement, AI has made advances in fields that many people never imagined were vulnerable to automation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Healthcare<\/b>: Machine-learning algorithms can diagnose some types of cancer or perform common X-rays with better accuracy than human radiologists. Other AI applications&nbsp; are in the works that can detect illnesses that range from cancers to Parkinson\u2019s disease from smelling human breath.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Creative work<\/b>: AI can compose music, write prose, build video-game levels, and write newspaper articles indistinguishable from human output.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Coding<\/b>: Low-code or no-code development platforms take the complexity out of coding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Analysis\/pattern recognition<\/b>: AI and machine learning are analysing data sets to identify patterns and trends. They are reporting real-time insights and can even predict, in some cases, what\u2019s likely to happen next.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Influencers<\/b>: Some of the biggest social-media influencers aren\u2019t human \u2014 they are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/uk\/fashion\/fashion-news\/a22722480\/how-artificial-intelligence-models-are-taking-over-your-instagram-feed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI-designed models<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Lip-reading<\/b>: While the average human accurately lip-reads 54% of the time, a deep network created by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1611.01599.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxford and Google DeepMind scientists<\/a>, LipNet, reached a 93%success score in reading people\u2019s lips.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Creating AIs<\/b>: Given the ability AI has to quickly process large data sets, it\u2019s able to create child AI applications that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ai.googleblog.com\/2017\/05\/using-machine-learning-to-explore.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outperform human-created AIs<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Listening<\/b>: Whether it\u2019s adding items to your shopping list, or producing meeting minutes from our Zoom calls, AI applications can more accurately capture and process what they hear than many humans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you hear stories like this, it\u2019s easy to feel uneasy. Like many of us, as Roose was writing about the inroads AI was making, he got worried about his own replaceability as a journalist. He embarked upon a path to research how we can avoid being replaced by robots, which is the premise of the book and the bulk of his presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><b>How to future-proof your career<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now an important question: What can we do as individuals to protect ourselves from being replaced by AI and robots?&nbsp; First, the bad news: Pretty much every job as it exists today can, in some way, be automated. In all honesty, there isn\u2019t any technology-proof job or career path for the long-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the good news: Human creativity and resolve is at an all-time premium. And it\u2019s not limited to big \u201cC\u201d creatives like (insert your favourite artist, composer, scientist, or performer).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a time to panic \u2014 it\u2019s a time to build on the roles and capabilities that can be automated to deliver new value at every level. Upskilling is now for everyone. We are all students again. Creativity, empathy, critical thinking, collaboration, data science, resilience, adaptability, and other \u201cnot-so-soft\u201d skills are ranked as critical for everyone in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-2020-future-of-work-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pandemic world<\/a>&nbsp;and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As AI drives down the price of goods and automated services, it also increases the value of human goods and human experiences. Accentuate the human labor involved in what you do or what you make \u2014 whether it\u2019s making a ceramic bowl, providing customer service, selling a technology product, or how you show up in any given moment to be present, aware, and ready to participate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think beyond using AI and automation to work as fast, at scale, and cheaply as possible. That\u2019s what everyone else will do. Make that human touch more visible and more value-added. This is what the human economy is about: experiences and feelings that machines cannot replicate. Experiences are personal on every side. That\u2019s what makes them special.
