font-family: var(--f-secondary); font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.0012em;\">The list of transactions is replicated across a number of computers in almost real time, rather than being stored on a central server.<\/span> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A peer-to-peer network that maintains the transaction records.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--c-nero); font-family: var(--f-secondary); font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.0012em;\">The ledger\u2019s only accessible to a network of partners, who share the work of updating and maintaining it.<\/span> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No intermediaries in the peer-to-peer network.<\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--c-nero); font-family: var(--f-secondary); font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.0012em;\">\u00a0Cryptography and digital signatures are used to prove participants\u2019 identity and authenticate transactions.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Public and private networks<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies or individuals can decide to share a ledger across a public network or a private one. Public networks \u2014 as the name implies \u2014 are open to all. Here, millions of people may participate at any one point in time. These \u201cpublic ledgers\u201d operate without the need for identity information, and most users adopt pseudonyms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bitcoin was the first public blockchain network, and it remains one of the largest. Another example is Ethereum, a platform that can host transactions involving smart contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses can also choose to set up a private network, where existing users invite others to transact and interact. In this case, the ledger\u2019s transactions aren\u2019t visible to the public and the very existence of the network itself may be hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Verification by consensus<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With both types of network, any changes to the ledger must take place through consensus \u2014 that is, records can only be altered if a majority of the ecosystem agrees that a change should be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, networks agree upfront on a definition of what this means in practice. If it is just a handful, integration might be the way to go. If you are targeting an ecosystem, blockchain may be the right choice.<\/span> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do you have a clear strategy for engaging and driving adoption with partners?<\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--c-nero); font-family: var(--f-secondary); font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.0012em;\">\u00a0Without their adoption of blockchain, the positive impact to your business will be limited.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/2019\/05\/enterprise-it-trends.html\/?d=7010M000001yv8PQAQ&amp;nc=7010M000001yv8UQAQ\">Research shows<\/a>&nbsp;more than one-fifth (22%) of IT leaders have already identified a use case for blockchain within their organisations.
