It\u2019s the collective force behind many products and services that are fast becoming indispensable to modern life. A third industrial revolution, beginning in the 1950s, saw the emergence of computers and digital technology. This led to the increasing automation of manufacturing and the disruption of industries including banking, energy, and communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The person who labeled today\u2019s advances as a new revolution was Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum and author of a book titled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/luminariaz.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/the-fourth-industrial-revolution-2016-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Fourth Industrial Revolution<\/a>. In a 2016 article,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2016\/01\/the-fourth-industrial-revolution-what-it-means-and-how-to-respond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schwab wrote<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201clike the revolutions that preceded it, the Fourth Industrial Revolution has the potential to raise global income levels and improve the quality of life for populations around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued: \u201cIn the future, technological innovation will also lead to a supply-side miracle, with long-term gains in efficiency and productivity. Transportation and communication costs will drop, logistics and global supply chains will become more effective, and the cost of trade will diminish, all of which will open new markets and drive economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not all good news, however. Schwab also suggested the revolution could lead to greater inequality, \u201cparticularly in its potential to disrupt labor markets.\u201d Furthermore, the job market may become increasingly segregated into \u201clow-skill\/low-pay\u201d and \u201chigh-skill\/high-pay\u201d roles, which could escalate social tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Schwab, \u201cthe changes are so profound that, from the perspective of human history, there has never been a time of greater promise or potential peril.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-what-are-the-technologies-driving-change\"><b>What are the technologies driving change?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The easiest way to understand the Fourth Industrial Revolution is to focus on the technologies driving it. These include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<p>Artificial intelligence (AI) describes computers that can \u201cthink\u201d like humans \u2014 recognising complex patterns, processing information, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations. AI is used in many ways, from spotting patterns in huge piles of unstructured data to powering the autocorrect on your phone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>Blockchain is a secure, decentralised, and transparent way of recording and sharing data, with no need to rely on third-party intermediaries. The digital currency Bitcoin is the best known blockchain application. However, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/company\/news-press\/stories\/2018\/11\/110918\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology can be used in other ways<\/a>, including making supply chains traceable, securing sensitive medical data anonymously, and combating voter fraud.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>New computational technologies are making computers smarter. They enable computers to process vast amounts of data faster than ever before, while the advent of the \u201ccloud\u201d has allowed businesses to safely store and access their information from anywhere with internet access, at any time. Quantum computing technologies now in development will eventually make computers millions of times more powerful. These computers will have the potential to supercharge AI, create highly complex data models in seconds, and speed up the discovery of new materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>Virtual reality (VR) offers immersive digital experiences (using a VR headset) that simulate the real world, while augmented reality merges the digital and physical worlds. Examples include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ap\/customer-success-stories\/loreal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u2019Or\u00e9al\u2019s makeup app<\/a>, which allows users to digitally experiment with makeup products before buying them, and the Google Translate phone app, which allows users to scan and instantly translate street signs, menus, and other text.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>Biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop new technologies and products for a range of uses, including developing new pharmaceuticals and materials, more efficient industrial manufacturing processes, and cleaner, more efficient energy sources.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acsnano.8b01084\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Researchers in Stockholm<\/a>, for example, are working on what is being touted as the strongest biomaterial ever produced.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>Robotics refers to the design, manufacture, and use of robots for personal and commercial use. While we\u2019re yet to see robot assistants in every home, technological advances have made robots increasingly complex and sophisticated. They are used in fields as wide-ranging as manufacturing, health and safety, and human assistance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>3D printing allows manufacturing businesses to print their own parts, with less tooling, at a lower cost, and faster than via traditional processes. Plus, designs can be customised to ensure a perfect fit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>Innovative materials, including plastics, metal alloys, and biomaterials, promise to shake up sectors including manufacturing, renewable energy, construction, and healthcare.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>The IoT describes the idea of everyday items \u2014 from medical wearables that monitor users\u2019 physical condition to cars and tracking devices inserted into parcels \u2014 being connected to the internet and identifiable by other devices. A big plus for businesses is that they can collect customer data from constantly connected products, allowing them to better gauge how customers use products and tailor marketing campaigns accordingly. There are also many industrial applications, such as farmers putting IoT sensors into fields to monitor soil attributes and inform decisions such as when to fertilise.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<p>Energy capture, storage, and transmission represent a growing market sector, spurred by the falling cost of renewable energy technologies and improvements in battery storage capacity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"h-how-will-the-fourth-industrial-revolution-affect-business\"><b>How will the Fourth Industrial Revolution affect business?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As these technologies change what\u2019s possible, they\u2019re also transforming customers\u2019 expectations. With technology enabling businesses to offer greater personalisation and more valuable, connected experiences across bricks-and-mortar and online channels, customers already have more options than ever, and they\u2019re not afraid to switch brands for a better experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research shows about half of customers say&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ap\/form\/pdf\/state-of-the-connected-customer-2nd-edition\/?d=7010M0000022CDiQAM&amp;nc=7010M0000022CDeQAM\" target=\"_blank\" adhocenable=\"false\" rel=\"noopener\">most companies fall short of their expectations<\/a>&nbsp;for great experiences, while&nbsp;76% report that it\u2019s easier than ever to take their business elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the things customers regard as being \u201cvery important to winning their business\u201d are connected processes, such as contextualised engagement based on earlier interactions (70%), and tailored engagement based on past interactions (59%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means businesses must focus more than ever on delivering a customer experience that differentiates them from competitors. Get it wrong and they risk losing more than just the sale \u2014 57% of customers have stopped buying from a company because a competitor provided a better experience. What\u2019s more, 62% say they share bad experiences with others. With peer review sites and social media offering unhappy customers a greater audience for complaints, this can damage a company\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because customers today expect personalised experiences, collecting quality data is more important for businesses than ever. Unfortunately, the research also found that 57% of customers are uncomfortable with how companies use their personal or business information. Almost two-thirds (62%) are more afraid of their data being compromised now than they were two years ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep customers\u2019 loyalty, companies need to not only deliver exceptional sales and service in brick-and-mortar stores and online, but also prove that they have customers\u2019 best interests at heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salesforce Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff believes a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2016\/08\/the-digital-revolution-is-here-but-without-a-revolution-in-trust-it-will-fail\/\" target=\"_blank\" adhocenable=\"false\" rel=\"noopener\">trust revolution<\/a>\u201d is needed if businesses are to fully embrace the potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDeploying AI will require a kind of reboot in the way companies think about privacy and security,\u201d he said. \u201cAI is fueled by data. The more the machine learns about you, the better it can predict your needs and act on your behalf. But as data becomes the currency of our digital lives, companies must ensure the privacy and security of customer information. As with previous industrial revolutions, the Fourth Industrial Revolution will profoundly affect people\u2019s lives as AI and increased automation see many types of jobs disappear. At the same time, entirely new categories of jobs are emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategic business and technology advisor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bernardmarr\/2016\/06\/20\/what-everyone-must-know-about-industry-4-0\/#35e26fb795f7\" target=\"_blank\" adhocenable=\"false\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernard Marr<\/a>&nbsp;said that computers and automation will come \u201ctogether in an entirely new way, with robotics connected remotely to computer systems equipped with machine-learning algorithms that can learn and control the robotics with very little input from human operators.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, \u201cIndustry 4.0 introduces what has been called the \u2018smart factory,\u2019 in which cyber-physical systems monitor the physical processes of the factory and make decentralised decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Fourth Industrial Revolution reshapes the <a adhocenable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/what-is-the-future-of-work.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">future of work<\/a>, businesses must prepare their people for the new world that lies ahead. Workers will more than likely need to update their skills, not just once but many times throughout their careers.
