You can still collaborate with a supersmart colleague \u2014 only now that coworker is likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ap\/artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human-AI collaboration is one of the most in-demand skills today, and your ability to master it can help you not only perform at a higher level, but stay relevant. In fact, Salesforce calls human-AI collaboration one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/reskilling-for-digital-labor-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 top enterprise skills<\/a> that workers need to succeed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHumans who use AI are supercharged because they have all that knowledge at the tips of their fingers,\u201d said Kaylin Voss, executive vice president of sales, Agentforce and Data Cloud, at Salesforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But like any collaboration, it\u2019s a two-way street: It\u2019s not just what you get from AI, but what you give. It can apply to generative AI, predictive AI, chatbots, and AI agents. The magic lies in the different skills humans and AI bring to the equation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI excels at pattern recognition, data processing, and repetitive tasks, while humans offer empathy, critical thinking, creativity, and cultural context. \u201cThey play to each other\u2019s strengths and augment each other\u2019s areas of challenge,\u201d said Lori Niles-Hofmann, a Toronto-based educational technology and AI transformation strategist, and founder of consulting firm 8Levers. \u201cTogether, they can achieve outcomes that neither could alone.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Niles-Hofmann pointed to her own work as an example. Because many of her clients are in Europe, she often woke to a flood of emails sent overnight. After too many mornings playing catch-up, she realised there was a better way: An AI agent could manage her inbox. She created one and trained it on her previous emails so it would adopt her tone and voice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Now, the agent sorts through emails and writes replies while Niles-Hofmann sleeps. In the morning, she reviews the agent\u2019s work, clicks Send when the responses are spot-on, and edits those that don\u2019t sound right. It\u2019s a true collaboration: She and the agent work together to manage her email, and now she has more time to strategise with clients.<br><br>It wasn\u2019t that hard, either. \u201cI built an agent,\u201d she said, \u201cand I\u2019m not that smart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\" id=\"h-the-benefits-of-human-ai-collaboration\">The benefits of human-AI collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Economic Forum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2025\/01\/four-ways-to-enhance-human-ai-collaboration-in-the-workplace\/#:~:text=Four%20imperatives%20will%20guide%20this,is%20both%20ethical%20and%20effective.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">predicts<\/a> that collaboration between humans and AI could generate up to $15.7 trillion in economic value by 2030 \u2014 growth that will come from \u201camplifying human capabilities.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverybody\u2019s looking for a competitive edge, for productivity gains,\u201d said Niles-Hofmann. \u201cThis is taking companies to the next level of achievement to be able to do what they could never do before.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salesforce is a good example. After Voss\u2019s sales team incorporated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ap\/agentforce\/\">Agentforce<\/a>, the Salesforce platform for building and deploying agents, into its workflows, it shortened its sales cycle by 36%. The team closed deals faster. \u201cWe had faster access to knowledge on products and were able to find information in minutes \u2014 not days \u2014 so we could move faster in engagements,\u201d Voss said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it isn\u2019t just companies that benefit from human-AI collaboration. People who know how to collaborate with AI are more in demand. PwC\u2019s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer found that jobs requiring AI skills \u2014 which infers the ability to collaborate with AI \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com.cy\/en\/press-room\/press-releases-2025\/pwc-global-ai-jobs-barometer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grew 7.5%<\/a> over last year, while total job postings fell by 11.3%. What\u2019s more, these AI-focused jobs offer a wage premium of 56%, up 25% from last year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-ways-to-foster-this-collaboration\">4 ways to foster this collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Human-AI collaboration doesn\u2019t just magically happen. People can develop it, and companies can encourage it, in several ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-play-around-with-the-technology\">1. Play around with the technology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to learn about, and partner with, AI is to get your hands dirty. Play with the tools. Ask Google Gemini, for example, to produce a report, or ask Agentforce to help with a support request. Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ap\/blog\/launch-an-agentic-ai-pilot\/\">launching an agentic AI pilot<\/a> to address one of your team\u2019s pain points.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for this exploration to work, people need the grace to fail. \u201cYou have to expect and embrace failure, and honour it within your organisation,\u201d said Niles-Hofmann. She gave a hypothetical example of a team that produces 50 widgets a week. When the team members start experimenting with AI, their output drops to 43 widgets. But as they grow more adept, their output returns to 50, and then exceeds that.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExperimentation can\u2019t be tied to compensation and benefits,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can\u2019t expect people to go through this massive change and transformation and just immediately rely on a technology they\u2019ve never encountered before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that the more people use AI \u2014 particularly agents \u2014 the more likely they\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/daily-ai-workforce-use-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trust the technology<\/a>, according to recent Slack research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-understand-how-ai-works-and-how-to-work-with-it\">2. Understand how AI works \u2014 and how to work with it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When Niles-Hofmann built her agent, she learned how the technology worked, which helped her better collaborate with it. It\u2019s a good lesson: One of the best ways to understand AI is by getting under the hood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Voss, who also built her own agent, said that \u201ccoaching\u201d it after it\u2019s up and running is important, too. In other words, you need to continually assess your AI and make changes to get the best performance out of the technology. Ask yourself: Where are the instructions wrong? How can I refine the guidance to make it more valuable? Then, modify as needed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voss suggested carving out time each day to learn about AI. You can do this through learning platforms like Salesforce\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/trailhead.salesforce.com\/today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trailhead<\/a>, but also through podcasts, which is how Voss loves to learn. Her favourites? The AI Daily Brief, Lenny\u2019s Podcast, ConTejas Code, and Hard Fork.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-write-better-prompts\">3. Write better prompts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You know the drill: You try a new AI tool. Its performance is \u2026 meh. You ditch it. The truth is, AI is still evolving. It doesn\u2019t always perform as well as we\u2019d like.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you might also need to look at what <em>you<\/em> can do better. For many people, that means <a href=\"https:\/\/trailhead.salesforce.com\/content\/learn\/modules\/prompt-fundamentals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing better prompts<\/a>. Niles-Hofmann recommended a simple fix. At the end of each prompt, ask the AI: \u201cIs there anything I\u2019m not asking you? Is there something I should be telling you? Do you have any clarifying questions?\u201d This gives the tool more information that it needs to excel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also helps you understand your collaborator better. \u201cWhen I\u2019m struggling with a tool,\u201d Niles-Hofmann said, \u201cI may not be prompting the AI in the way that it\u2019s been trained.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"layout-five wp-block-salesforce-blog-offer\">\n\t<div class=\"wp-block-offer__wrapper\">\n\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-offer__content\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-offer__title\">Build an agent on your own<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-offer__description\">Learn the basics of setting up and testing a conversational agent in Agentforce. Use critical thinking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To get the most out of AI, you need to understand what it can and cannot do. This includes fact-checking what it creates and anticipating hallucinations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you also need to understand AI\u2019s limitations at scale. The Wharton School highlighted this in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu\/article\/does-ai-limit-our-creativity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>, when it asked two groups to generate ideas for a new product.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One group was told to work with OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT; the other relied solely on their own brains. The results? ChatGPT improved the quality of individual ideas, but led people within the group to generate similar ideas. Only 6% of the AI-generated ideas were considered unique, compared to 100% in the human group.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to think critically \u2014 to know when to use AI and when human skills work better \u2014 is \u201cprobably one of the strongest traits you can bring to the human-AI relationship,\u201d Niles-Hofmann said. \u201cYou still need a human being to look at the output, think about it, and question it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-measure-the-success-of-human-ai-collaboration\">How to measure the success of human-AI collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Niles-Hofmann said the simplest way to assess human-AI collaboration is to look at AI adoption rates. After all, people can only collaborate with AI if they\u2019re using it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she also said other metrics for measuring human-AI collaboration are \u201creally, really tricky\u201d because the ways that companies measure work are changing as AI and agents become more prevalent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voss agreed. \u201cProductivity and efficiency have become table stakes,\u201d she said, adding that people should look instead at how AI affects growth. Her sales team\u2019s win rate, for example, increased by 11% after it started collaborating with agents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voss also looks at employee satisfaction scores, which have increased, too.&nbsp; \u201cI care more about how we\u2019re getting better, instead of just faster,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The true value of the collaboration, however, may be hard to measure. Humans and AI working together can lead to better decision-making, accelerated innovation, and a competitive advantage \u2014 all things that are hard to quantify.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-collaboration-is-the-key-to-success\">Collaboration is the key to success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">With human-AI collaboration, the sum is usually greater than its parts.
