While continuing to maintain their BAU of business security, recovery and continuity, they\u2019re also being urgently tasked with driving business transformation and growth as companies adapt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has made the role of the CIO more relevant than ever as companies work to shape and guide their organisations through and beyond the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the CIO\u2019s time to shine,\u201d says Paul Roehrig, Head of Strategy for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cognizant.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cognizant<\/a> Digital Business, which drives digital transformation through AI, IoT and digital engineering. \u201cIt\u2019s not news that they\u2019re helping drive the business, but their role in the pandemic has gotten exponentially more essential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"digital-that-matters\">Digital that matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital technology enables remote work, agile responses to crises and even communication on phones and computers. As such, it presents new opportunities for growth and transformation in our current scenario where more traditional, in person, manual ways of doing business are impossible or impractical. According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/topics\/leadership\/global-technology-leadership-study.html?id=us:2el:3dp:wsjspon:awa:WSJCIO:2020:WSJFY20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deloitte study<\/a>, organisations in 2020 are seeking out CIOs who are focused on foundational transformation rather than incremental change.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-quote-article\" style=\"\"><div class=\"wp-block-quote-social-wrapper\"><figure class=\"wp-block-quote-article-quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow can also prepare for and lead tech-driven transformation that could help their businesses thrive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CIOs may be central to business strategy right now, but this importance won\u2019t decrease in the long term. Roehrig believes we\u2019re at the very early stages of what he calls \u2018digital that matters\u2019. This does not mean another app of convenience but technology that fundamentally changes, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/07\/future-of-finserv-digital-customer-engagement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how we bank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/05\/new-research--5-things-australians-working-from-home-need-from-m.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manage our work<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/07\/the-future-of-retail--behavioural-change-in-the-novel-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relate to each other<\/a>. At the centre of these business transformations is the CIO. According to the Deloitte report, 50% of CEOs now see the CIO as the key driver of business strategy in the next three to five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"from-cio-to-ceo\">From CIO to CEO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CIOs have new mandates in the COVID era, and they may be measured on new criteria like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/06\/infographic-true-cost-technology.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whether their workforce is fully productive while working remotely<\/a> and whether the organisation can serve its customers entirely digitally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pandemic-raises-cio-role-to-next-level-11592951200?mod=hp_minor_pos4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> Box Inc. CEO Aaron Levie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other new things too. The CIO\u2019s scope now includes ensuring employee well-being, scaling capacity for virtual events, and understanding customer needs, says Salesforce EVP and CIO Jo-ann Olsovsky.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNone of us has ever lived through anything like this,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/content\/dam\/web\/en_us\/www\/documents\/white-papers\/the-new-work-from-anywhere-by-jo-ann-olsovksy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says Olsovsky<\/a>. \u201cA big part of our job is to enable our people and be more relevant than ever for our customers, because they have new needs. The CIO is in a unique position to support customer success because we see the entire company.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She goes on to explain that finance, marketing, sales and other departments typically swim in their own lanes, but IT\u2019s cross-functional perch enables it to impact every corner of the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That unique vantage point, coupled with COVID-related opportunities to fundamentally transform the business, could create new paths for CIOs to advance to the level of CEO. All of this helps companies charge paths and create a lasting competitive advantage that will continue to lead the way as the pandemic subsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCIOs had already begun wrestling with the challenges and opportunities of the digital economy, and the pandemic has obviously accelerated that imperative,\u201d says Roehrig. \u201cLeaders in every sector are deploying technology to create frictionless consumer experiences, while controlling costs, all in a world that has gotten more virtual literally overnight. We are truly at the dawn of a new era, but the sun is rising twice as fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/07\/how-to-make-it-a-business-partner.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accelerated the evolution of the CIO from a support function to that of a business leader<\/a> \u2013 just like it\u2019s accelerated adaptation of low-code technology, video calls and more efficient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/04\/7-working-from-home-tips-from-australia-s--1-workplace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work-from-home<\/a> models. No other role has risen to prominence more quickly, and been more indispensable to the business, than that of the CIO in 2020.
