But I\u2019m hearing one question echoing through virtual conference rooms now: \u201cHow did we do in five weeks what would typically take us five years?\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some organisations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/05\/leading-through-change--lessons-from-cios-who-are-leading-in-cri.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new customer communities and remote contact centres have been stood up in days<\/a>, interactive self-assessment tools have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/womens-college-hospital-launches-digitally-enabled-covid-19-wesley?articleId=6648390850042740736#comments-6648390850042740736&amp;trk=public_profile_article_view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">built and integrated<\/a> with hospital systems, thousands of new employees have been on-boarded in a week. Engineers and academics have collaborated to reverse-engineer existing health devices and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/04\/3-ways-to-build-resilience-amid-crisis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">design new ones for fast 3D printing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we saw clothing producers make scrubs or distilleries make sanitiser. Both might sound small, but they\u2019re significant \u2013 some of these are small businesses that launched to market completely new products based on demand at lightning speed. The yoga studios that offered online classes within days despite a lack of ecommerce experience \u2013 they diversified their income streams and formed relationships with entirely new customer bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge now is to find the incredible projects or innovations in your organisation, and harness the new behaviours, processes and ways of operating that took them from \u2018impossible\u2019 to \u2018done\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to find the goodness, capture it and use it to accelerate to growth post-pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-communicate-the-importance-of-looking-back\">1. Communicate the importance of looking back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the haste surrounding recovery efforts, it will be so easy for your team to overlook this important retrospective process. So start talking about it now and encourage your team to think about where they have seen incredible achievement within the company or outside it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Share with them examples of other companies\u2019 and communities\u2019 achievements to get them started on thinking about this, from the big ones \u2013\u00a0launching remote service centres, reverse-engineering ventilators \u2013 to the small ones \u2013 selling sanitiser, launching online yoga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou can&#8217;t connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backwards.\u201d<\/p><footer>Steve Jobs<\/footer><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure there are examples that match your company\u2019s size, and possibly even some from your industry, and talk about the impact of these initiatives on the companies and their communities beyond \u2018they answered service calls\u2019 and \u2018they sold sanitiser\u2019. What did these changes mean in the moment? What do they mean for the future of that company?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-invest-time-and-a-senior-leader\">2. Invest time and a senior leader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of this initiative will be reflected by who owns it. You\u2019ve done the hard work of getting the team invested in the project at step one but to relegate it to a junior team member now would dilute the impact it could have \u2013 and would communicate that the findings will not necessarily be heard by leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appoint an executive sponsor, ask for a plan and monitor progress in leadership meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-use-a-retrospective-framework\">3. Use a retrospective framework<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a retrospective framework to determine what worked, how it was different and who made the difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<p>What processes were circumvented, ignored or consciously deleted, and what new processes were used?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li><li>\n<p>What new tools were used and what old tools were left behind?<\/p>\n<\/li><li>\n<p>Who collaborated, how did they collaborate and why did the collaboration work?<\/p>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, understand any new risk that may have arisen as a result of the different ways of working, and ask whether those different ways of working are sustainable \u2013 were they just the right approach for a time of crisis but too risky for business as usual? Don\u2019t be too coy here \u2013 really push to make sure the risks are real and not just uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-celebrate-the-wins-and-the-heroes-along-the-way\">4. Celebrate the wins and the heroes along the way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Set a regular schedule for yourself to celebrate heroes as they\u2019re discovered. Your project team will be asking various people for information along the way about what they achieved and how, so it\u2019s important to keep everyone\u2019s interest. Whether it\u2019s in a weekly all-hands call or on the all-company chat, highlight those who\u2019ve tried new ways of working or taken risks, whether they\u2019re in your teams or they\u2019re your partners and suppliers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-codify-the-goodness\">5. Codify the goodness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To make sure the new behaviours that enabled your team to move mountains continue in the post-pandemic era, they need to become part of your organisation\u2019s processes and be embedded in the culture of the business.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote><p>\u201cComfort and growth will never co-exist.\u201d<\/p><footer>Ginni Rometty | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmo.com.au\/article\/629768\/ibm-ginni-rometty-comfort-growth-can-never-co-exist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> in conversation with Marc Benioff at Dreamforce 2017 <\/a><\/footer><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be tempting to just keep going. It will be tempting to celebrate the achievements \u2013 the \u2018what\u2019 \u2013 but still to get straight back to the old processes and behaviours \u2013 forgetting the \u2018how\u2019.
