{"id":50390,"date":"2020-04-24T18:20:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T18:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/?p=50390"},"modified":"2022-10-28T13:50:48","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T20:50:48","slug":"3-ways-middle-managers-can-shine-in-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/3-ways-middle-managers-can-shine-in-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"3 ways middle managers can shine in crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Soledad O\u2019Brien, the award-winning journalist and producer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2020\/04\/soledad-obrien-give-people-a-chance-to-lead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently told<\/a> Salesforce CMO Stephanie Buscemi that in times of crisis, opportunities emerge in every organisation for true leaders to rise to the occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople in the workplace want a chance to lead, even in a pandemic,\u201d she said. \u201cGiving people the chance to run something is quite a big vote of confidence. And you need them \u2013 so it works both ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how, exactly, can middle managers \u2013 those outside the senior executive ranks \u2013 be heard in these critical times? We drilled into this question with Amy Wilkinson, CEO and founder of innovation firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingenuitycorp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ingenuity<\/a>, a lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business, and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Creators-Code-Essential-Extraordinary-Entrepreneurs\/dp\/B00SXF3U2E\/ref=sr_1_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Creator\u2019s Code: The Six Essential Skills of Extraordinary Entrepreneurs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As impressive as those qualifications are, they\u2019re all from the past decade. In a previous career, she was a White House Fellow and Special Assistant to the United States Trade Representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilkinson has spent years studying what makes companies and entrepreneurs successful, through booms, busts and everything in between. Here are her three key recommendations now for middle managers and those who employ them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-find-the-gap\">1. Find the gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Middle managers are typically on the front lines, particularly in times of upheaval. They clearly see what\u2019s happening on the ground with customers, suppliers and partners, and are often better equipped to spot opportunities. \u201cThese folks are circulating in the problem zone, so they know what\u2019s needed,\u201d Wilkinson says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few examples of COVID-19-related gaps companies have filled:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<p>Big data firm Palantir\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-02\/coronavirus-news-palantir-gives-away-data-mining-tools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work<\/a> with the U.S. CDC and the U.K. NHS on coronavirus-tracking software based on its data gathering and visualisation platform<\/p>\n<\/li><li>\n<p>Cosmetics giant L\u2019Oreal\u2019s product <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allure.com\/story\/loreal-produce-hand-sanitizer-shortage-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pivot<\/a> at its North American plants to fill the enormous demand for hand sanitiser<\/p>\n<\/li><li>\n<p>Tee-shirt and underwear producer HanesBrands\u2019 move to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wxii12.com\/article\/hanesbrands-reducing-executive-pay-ramping-up-face-masks-production-in-response-to-covid-19\/32073467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convert<\/a> factories to make face masks.<\/p>\n<\/li><li>\n<p>Apparel brand Jockey International now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenoshanews.com\/news\/local\/jockey-donating-ppe-nationally-locally-in-fight-against-covid-19\/article_52eb3255-f1f3-558c-9c53-389f5de4a28e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manufactures<\/a> critically needed personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of Tier 3 isolation gowns.<\/p>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior executives didn\u2019t come up with these significant company pivots in a vacuum. As Wilkinson notes, nobody has a monopoly on great ideas and nobody can solve a problem alone, especially in times of turbulence. Right now, it\u2019s all hands on deck.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut if you can tap into other people\u2019s points of view, and you can build on other people\u2019s ideas quickly, that&#8217;s how you can solve problems you haven\u2019t solved before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-repurpose-existing-ideas\">2. Repurpose existing ideas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, great ideas for products or services are not new. It\u2019s the application that\u2019s new.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnyone in the organisation can look for and recognise something in one department that can be applied somewhere else. It\u2019s the cross-fertilisation of ideas,\u201d says Wilkinson, who describes this as \u201cbeing a sunbird\u201d in reference to birds that pick up something from one area and drop it in another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stresses that these ideas can come from anywhere, including anything in your personal life, not necessarily from inside the organisation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about lift and shift, import and export, and putting a new lens on something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is happening left and right in the COVID-19 context. For example, clothing brand Cue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cue.cc\/News\/COVID-19-Response-ScrubsForStVincents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making<\/a> scrubs for St Vincent\u2019s Hospital and sporting goods empire Decathlon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/decathlon-turns-scuba-gear-into-ventilators-to-help-fight-coronavirus-622308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">switching<\/a> from snorkelling masks to respirators.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-offer-a-solution\">3. Offer a solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways for middle managers to make an impact is to make an offer or bring an idea to their boss.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInstead of saying \u2018I need guidance or I can\u2019t handle this task\u2019 you can say \u2018I see a need for us to do XYZ\u2019 and I have a proposal or possible solution to share,\u201d says Wilkinson. \u201cThat is a great way to get leaders\u2019 attention, and it turns the power dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The offer, she says, may be a game-changer for the organisation the boss didn\u2019t realise they needed and can take pressure off stressed-out senior leaders. On the flip side, it can be as simple as offering to send questions in advance to a collaborator or to get on a call at 8pm&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilkinson adds that this is effective even if the offer never gains traction. \u201cThere\u2019s no harm, no foul,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s a positive intention, and people are going to notice that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, implicit in several points above is senior leaders\u2019 need to foster an entrepreneurial culture that empowers middle managers (and the entire organisation) to ideate and execute new ideas.
