In 2019, our Australian team volunteered more than 40,000 hours, with people like <a href=\"http:\/\/salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/my-experience-as-a-volunteer-australian-firefighter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">volunteer fire brigade captain John Watson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/my-tour-de-cure-journey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">cyclist Gareth Williams<\/a> setting incredible examples of what\u2019s possible when VTO is built into an organisation\u2019s culture. For a VTO scheme to take hold and add value to an organisation\u2019s culture, it has to be carefully planned and managed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the three common challenges that many businesses face when adopting VTO programs and some strategies for overcoming them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-matching-good-intentions-with-good-corporate-social-responsibility\">Matching good intentions with good corporate social responsibility&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most employees will be eager to make the most of their VTO but they might not know where to start looking. Businesses can help volunteers find a cause and uphold their corporate social responsibility by:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Encouraging employees to look to their existing community networks for opportunities \u2013 family, neighbourhoods, schools \u2013 and focus on causes they care about.&nbsp; <\/li><li>Creating a platform for employees to share volunteer opportunities internally. <\/li><li>Supplying a go-to list of local nonprofits that could use help. <\/li><li>Initiating and creating opportunities involving the business. For example, host a company-wide half-day or day-long activity. Here are some ways to show your employees that you take VTO seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><b style=\"color: var(--c-nero); font-family: var(--f-secondary); font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.0012em;\">Make sure senior leaders set the example. <\/b><span style=\"color: var(--c-nero); font-family: var(--f-secondary); font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.0012em;\">When the C-suite takes VTO, that sends a strong message of encouragement.&nbsp;<\/span> <\/li><li><b style=\"color: var(--c-nero); font-family: var(--f-secondary); font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.0012em;\">Make volunteering part of the workplace culture.<\/b><span style=\"color: var(--c-nero); font-family: var(--f-secondary); font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.0012em;\"> Employees are willing to spend more time doing volunteer work when the organisational culture is healthy and when they enjoy recognition among their peers.
