The destruction wrought by the bushfires has been staggering. As a volunteer \u2018firey\u2019 I\u2019ve seen it up close.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over these past months I\u2019ve also seen immense courage, generosity and optimism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll never forget either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"account-director-some-days-brigade-captain-all-the-rest\">Account Director some days, Brigade Captain all the rest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my day job I\u2019m a Key Account Director at Salesforce. I\u2019ve worked at Salesforce now for a couple of years and one of the best things is the support I receive to continue my volunteer work \u2013 it\u2019s not just something I have to fit in. In previous jobs I\u2019ve been able to do what I needed because of the individual goodwill of a few terrific managers. At Salesforce, my work as a volunteer Brigade Captain is organisationally endorsed and supported. After 16 years with the NSW RFS that\u2019s especially important to me during one of the most treacherous fire seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"calm-in-the-eye-of-the-storm\">Calm in the eye of the storm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The work of a volunteer fire brigade is built on teamwork, strategy, trust, hard work and a sense of purpose. It might look chaotic on your TV screen, but fire fighting is extremely calm, methodical, structured, fact-based work. We have to make very black and white decisions: \u201cwe can save that house, but we can\u2019t save that one\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve heard some of the clips of firefighters in their trucks driving through what looks like the apocalypse, then you\u2019ve probably been amazed at how calm and organised they sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/NSW_ruralfireservices.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"Rural Fire Services\"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><i><sub>John\u2019s crew hard at work at midday in Batemans Bay.<\/sub><\/i> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve witnessed this quality of calm and control in RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons. His attention to detail has been an important part of his leadership. He knows all the towns across the state, never stumbles over the geography and never mispronounces a name. That might sound minor in the scheme of things, but it\u2019s not small if you\u2019re a member of one of those towns. At that level, volunteering isn\u2019t a casual commitment. It\u2019s more like a second job. There is something on every day \u2013 lots of training, lots of recruitment, lots of fundraising. It\u2019s good to be able to help people on their worst day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology today makes staying in contact with my Salesforce work much easier and we are set up better than most organisations when it comes to tools and systems. I\u2019ve had customer meetings when I\u2019ve been sitting in the fire truck!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But sometimes you\u2019re just completely without comms. Most people are pretty understanding \u2013 they\u2019ve seen what\u2019s happening and they know what\u2019s important. Often I can schedule my work week based on what I see happening with the weather forecast. But sometimes I just have to send an apology email at 2am letting people know I won\u2019t be around for the rest of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/australian_bushfires_volunteer.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"A member of John\u2019s brigade Tumbledown Dick Rural Fire Brigade doing their part.\"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><i><sub><em>A member of John\u2019s brigade Tumbledown Dick Rural Fire Brigade doing their part.<\/em><\/sub><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously this has an impact on my work, but with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/coming-together-during-australian-bushfires-pip-marlow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salesforce increasing its paid volunteer time off (VTO) from seven to 27 days a year for staff assisting with the bushfire recovery,<\/a>&nbsp;the company is clearly prepared to support this time away from the office. Without VTO and Salesforce\u2019s Uncapped Emergency Service Leave, I\u2019d be taking unpaid leave or eating into my holidays. I\u2019ve seen the financial and emotional toll on firefighters who don\u2019t have a company that supports them or who are in a small business or self-employed. They use up leave, they use up holidays, they miss time with their families. People give up a lot to be able to do this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My own daughter is a volunteer firefighter too which makes me incredibly proud and, of course, concerned. I hope the younger generation of volunteers coming through don\u2019t have to do as much firefighting, but unfortunately that\u2019s unlikely to be the reality. So mostly I hope they can do this work with even better resourcing and planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"into-the-flames-at-batemans-bay\">Into the flames at Batemans Bay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At Batemans Bay, we crossed over the bridge and directly into the suburbs that were on fire. We saw the clouds of smoke so we knew what we were about to head into. But you don\u2019t dwell too much because you don\u2019t have time to ponder. You just have to get into it. You make sure that everyone on the crew is working together and has the right gear on to minimise the chance of injury. And then it\u2019s like a marathon, because you\u2019re out there for 14 hours, working at a consistent non-stop rate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/johnwatson_salesforce_volunteer.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"John and his colleague enjoying a moment of comic relief after defending small town Nelligen, just outside of Batemans Bay. \"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><i><em><sub>John and his colleague enjoying a moment of comic relief after defending small town Nelligen, just outside of Batemans Bay.<\/sub><\/em><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re working with a crew who are all from the same brigade, you don\u2019t have to talk much. You\u2019ve all done it a hundred times before and it\u2019s seamless. The team just knows what to do. A lot of it is very physically demanding but we have techniques and skills to minimise that physical effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there\u2019s amazing trust across the services. Everyone mucks in together and takes guidance from whoever has the best, most relevant expertise at the time, whether that be Fire Rescue, RFS, National Parks or State Forestry. We recognise when someone has a particular skill set to offer, and we listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-you-can-help\">How you can help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From cases of beer left on our truck to meals left outside the station, we\u2019ve been on the receiving end of really generous and thoughtful gestures and contributions. Financial donations to our brigade alone have meant we can buy iPads to help us navigate. Certainly we\u2019d encourage people to donate to the charities that can most effectively distribute funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone wanting to volunteer would be welcomed by a great group called <a href=\"https:\/\/blazeaid.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BlazeAid<\/a> that\u2019s helping to rebuild infrastructure with a focus on farming in rural communities. They\u2019d love people to participate for two to four days. You don\u2019t need to be skilled. They just need people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rebuilding will be about human power, getting out there and working together. And it will take years. I know from having attended fires in towns like Pappinbarra (north of Port Macquarie), which burned in 2018 and end of 2019, that recovery is a long haul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in a few months\u2019 time, take a week\u2019s holiday down the south coast. Go with an empty car. Buy your fresh fruit from stallholders on the roadside. Get your groceries from the local shops. Stay in a cabin or a motel. Let\u2019s be there for these communities once the dust and the ashes have settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to help?
