{"id":51316,"date":"2019-03-19T19:09:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T19:09:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/?p=51316"},"modified":"2022-11-05T00:07:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-05T07:07:54","slug":"6-steps-for-lightning-migration-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/6-steps-for-lightning-migration-success\/","title":{"rendered":"6 steps for Lightning migration success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Admins migrating teams from Classic to Lightning know that success goes well beyond technical know-how \u2013&nbsp;change management is just as important. I\u2019ve been involved in a Lightning implementation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/2018\/06\/not-for-profit-advocate-heidi-prowse-shares-her-trailblazer-stor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in my role as a consultant at the Australian Academy of Science<\/a>. For me, the key steps are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Setting the scene <\/li><li>Promoting the core benefits of change <\/li><li>Conducting a health check <\/li><li>Co-designing with a representative working group <\/li><li>Creating a positive context <\/li><li>Dealing with resistance to change <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"setting-the-scene\">Setting the scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing the process and getting buy-in is essential, so it\u2019s important to provide a general overview of the process that everyone involved can understand and relate to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to set the scene and have people understand they\u2019ll be going through another implementation process. To help people forge that path I often use the example of Microsoft Office updates. It provides a good reference point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you upgrade your Microsoft Office, there is a familiarity there. A few things have changed and a few things are better, but it\u2019s the same experience at its core. And people understand a change will happen every few years. They\u2019ll open up Microsoft Office again in the future and there will be another version. It won\u2019t bother them because they are ready for it and have been through that change before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"promote-the-core-benefits\">Promote the core benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside understanding what is going to happen, users need to understand why \u2014 we need to illustrate the benefits of the new system to them. The benefits to the business are important, of course. But to get that buy-in at an individual level, the user has to understand how it will improve what they do \u2014 how it will make their work lives better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/trailhead.salesforce.com\/en\/content\/learn\/modules\/lex_migration_introduction\/lex_migration_introduction_whatis\">benefits for users across different functions<\/a>&nbsp;to tailor your conversations and communications with different user groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We constantly need to remember that, as admins, we might have a clear idea of what change is going to happen and why, we may have a clear view of life on the other side of the project, but others are yet to see this. They are still dealing with the process. Consider where they are in the change process, empathise with their concern about what the future will look like and what it means for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guide them down the path you have already traversed. Use your knowledge and experience to take them through to the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/form\/other\/blog-newsletter\/?d=7013y000000ZfAjAAK&amp;nc=7013y000000ZfAoAAK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/08_0019231_Subscription_Banner_Blog_Banner_590x180-99.gif?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"Subscribe to our newsletter\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conduct-a-health-check\">Conduct a health check<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as with a new implementation, a migration from Classic to Lightning requires a data health check \u2014 and the state of the data in Classic will determine the scope of the migration process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I use Salesforce Health Check to see what the status of the current system is because, while we don\u2019t need to oversee a data migration to Lightning \u2014 the data is already there \u2014 we do need to make sure we\u2019ll see it on the other end and we know how it will appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"co-design-with-a-representative-working-group\">Co-design with a representative working group<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A representative working group allows you to co-design with the people who are passionate about what you\u2019re doing. The group should include an executive \/ decision maker and users from all levels of the business. It can\u2019t simply be managers of the users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group also needs to be cross-functional \u2014 if users sit across sales, marketing and service, bring people from all three functions in to co-design. This will reassure each team that their needs are being heard and incorporated into the new experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"create-a-positive-context\">Create a positive context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your working group will become your change champions across the organisation \u2014 they\u2019ll bring everyone else on board and support everyone in the transition if you can create a positive context for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s what\u2019s so great about getting people involved in designing the new experience \u2014 they start to sell the journey for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trailhead\u2019s seven-module&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/trailhead.salesforce.com\/en\/content\/learn\/trails\/lex_admin_implementation\">\u2018Get started with Lightning Experience&#8217; trail<\/a>&nbsp;talks about considering influencers, like your change champions, and the impact these influencers can have in the workplace. Lean on them for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dealing-with-resistance-to-change\">Dealing with resistance to change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reality is that a percentage of your workforce will be resistant to change, and are uncomfortable with it. To make sure you have all your bases covered, documentation is vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s critical to have a change management policy, and review user policies and user agreements, so they are current and reflective of where you\u2019re going. These are the tools you can use to win over people who are struggling to come on the journey with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Documentation can often be the best way to reach those who are change-resistant, by providing clear communication at each stage of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, consider all the different types of learners you have in your organisation \u2014 ensure you have a strategy to communicate with each and provide them the time they need to consider and digest what you\u2019re asking of them and what you want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"contextual-driver
