But so are the risks. Why is this important? You may do something differently this quarter than you did last quarter, based on the latest data. But if your data is outdated or incorrect, that\u2019s what the AI will use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When training your models for generative AI, you should first ensure data excellence from top to bottom. To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tableau.com\/learn\/articles\/what-is-data-cleaning?_ga=2.103149510.712456258.1689598831-495257290.1663014576&amp;_gac=1.183497172.1687809166.Cj0KCQjw7uSkBhDGARIsAMCZNJv_97bLOUY83543slv4Qnex5WnQV5KPthlVBbtLHIi6aNyM_lI1j2YaAumTEALw_wcB&amp;_gl=1*15mu0nb*_ga*NDk1MjU3MjkwLjE2NjMwMTQ1NzY.*_ga_3VHBZ2DJWP*MTY4OTYxMjgxNy41MjYuMS4xNjg5NjEyODM0LjAuMC4w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">get your data house in order<\/a>, remove duplicates, outliers, errors, and other things that can negatively affect how you make decisions. Then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/products\/genie\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">connect your data sources<\/a> \u2014 marketing, sales, service, commerce \u2013 into a single record, updated in real time, so the AI can make the best recommendations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKinsey recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/quantumblack\/our-insights\/four-essential-questions-for-boards-to-ask-about-generative-ai?stcr=90F5E49549464F9493FA509914D59E83&amp;cid=other-eml-dre-mip-mck&amp;hlkid=e4779f69ac6c4b48b207867d7cb76685&amp;hctky=13459582&amp;hdpid=460bc6e5-6857-403b-9c30-2a990019b43d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cCompanies that have not yet found ways to harmonise and provide ready access to their data will be unable to unlock much of generative AI\u2019s potentially transformative power.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-we-establish-trust\">How do we establish trust?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust \u2013&nbsp;that you will protect customer data and use AI ethically \u2013&nbsp;is at the heart of how widely and successfully businesses and customers will embrace generative AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself, is your technology partner building AI safeguards into the fabric of their systems and apps? Large language models (LLMs), the computer programs\u00a0upon which AI algorithms are based, contain huge amounts of data but they lack safeguards, controls and privacy features. These guardrails protect data and help ensure ethical use, boosting chances of AI success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-we-need-to-reorganise-our-company-around-ai\">Do we need to reorganise our company around AI? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/07\/building-the-ai-powered-organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">Research<\/a> featured in Harvard Business Review found that AI initiatives face formidable cultural and organisational barriers, and that companies need to align their culture, structure, and ways of working to support and scale AI. Ask yourself, do all your stakeholders share that responsibility?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative AI is such a game changer that some companies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/businesses-have-a-big-idea-to-tackle-ai-more-task-forces-be0d6981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">establishing cross-functional AI task forces<\/a> to determine how to proceed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/quantumblack\/our-insights\/why-businesses-need-explainable-ai-and-how-to-deliver-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">Experts suggest<\/a> establishing an AI governance committee to, among other things, guide development teams and set standards for explainability. That is, determining how and why AI makes the recommendations it does.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schneider Electric, for one, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/ai-at-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">formalised an AI program<\/a> under a chief AI officer and scaled it to every corner of the company. It implemented a global hub-and-spoke AI operating model. Each business function \u201cspoke\u201d (marketing, sales, service, etc.) has an AI product owner and change agent who works with the tech competency centre \u201chub\u201d to find new uses for AI, deliver the technology, and ensure employee adoption.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery use case \u2014 and we have AI use cases in almost every function \u2014 has people from both the AI Hub and business,\u201d said Madhu Hosadurga, global vice president of enterprise AI at Schneider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-we-have-the-right-skills\">Do we have the right skills?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is evolving at such a furious pace, the answer to this question (for most companies) is probably no. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/digital-skills-based-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">recent survey<\/a> found 67% of global business leaders are considering using generative AI, but roughly the same number of IT leaders say their employees don\u2019t have the skills to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being an AI-first company (like being digital-first or mobile-first before) requires a close evaluation of your talent. First, you need to determine your current capabilities relative to what you want to accomplish. Identify the gaps, then prioritise building those AI skills. Of course, these will vary by your company\u2019s industry and specific needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will likely have to develop a hiring plan to acquire talent, and train workers to use generative AI. You can do the latter by providing access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/learn-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">on-demand learning<\/a> for critical skills, incentivising workers to learn new skills and prioritising upskilling as part of the job.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChange management starts with people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/plus\/experience\/salesforce_ai_day\/series\/salesforce_ai_day\/episode\/episode-s1e1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noopener\">said Clara Shih<\/a>, CEO of AI at Salesforce. \u201cIt\u2019s going to take all of us to reskill and learn about these new capabilities.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-gen-ai-terms-do-i-need-to-know-to-carry-on-a-conversation\">What gen AI terms do I need to know to carry on a conversation? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be a software engineer or data scientist to understand gen AI or speak with authority about it with technical people.
