(and How It Works)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Remember the last time you moved? You probably had to pack up too much stuff, transport it in a truck and unpack it in the new location \u2013 hoping it survived the trip. Imagine if your furniture and belongings could just teleport to your new place in perfect condition. It\u2019s not possible (yet) in the physical world, but with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/data\/zero-copy-partner-network\/\">zero copy integration<\/a>, that\u2019s how you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/data\/\">handle your customer data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to zero copy or zero ETL (extract-transform-load), it\u2019s possible to share data among two or more data stores without actually moving it. This is great news to companies that store data in a cloud data warehouse like Snowflake or Google BigQuery. Some of them are reluctant to adopt a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/what-is-a-cdp\/\">customer data platform<\/a> (CDP) because they don&#8217;t want to duplicate data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They don&#8217;t have to. In addition to making access faster and easier, it cuts down on the expense and risk of errors that\u2019s always incurred when data has to be moved or changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copying data from one database to another is a common practice. Often, this process entails some form of data transformation called extract-transform-load (ETL). It can be a useful and even necessary step in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/first-party-data\/\">managing enterprise data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it has its challenges. The actual mechanism differs from platform to platform and is different whether you are accessing data from the CDP into the data warehouse or vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the following examples, we&#8217;ll be using Salesforce Data Cloud as the CDP and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/stories\/salesforce-data-platform-product-insight\/\">our partner<\/a> Snowflake as the data warehouse. data warehouse is simply a reliable place to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/data\/what-is-a-data-lakehouse\/\">store and access data<\/a> that is important to the business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional data warehouses work with highly-structured data in formatted tables, and they tend to be quite slow and complicated. On the other hand, modern data warehouses like Snowflake can handle almost any type of data, process it quickly, and are easier to use. Because they are built on top of cloud platforms like Amazon and Google, they are easier to plug into other systems like CDPs that use the same platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(<a href=\"#TOC\">Back to top<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cdptodatawarehouse\">How it works: from CDP to data warehouse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, we are inside our data warehouse and want to access data that is in the CDP. In other words, information is going <em>out<\/em> from the CDP to the data warehouse. This process is sometimes called <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.salesforce.com\/blogs\/2023\/08\/share-data-between-salesforce-data-cloud-and-snowflake\"><em>data sharing<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The usual steps are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify the objects \u2013 or data nuggets \u2013 within the CDP you&#8217;d like to share. In the case of Salesforce Data Cloud, these are called data lake objects (cleansed data), data model objects (structured by the CDP user for their business cases), and calculated insights objects (for formulas like lifetime value).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using point-and-click, link these objects to the data share target, in this case Snowflake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inside Snowflake, the user can perform queries across data in Snowflake as well as the objects linked via the data share \u2014 all at the same time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind the scenes, the process creates &#8220;virtual tables&#8221; that describe the Data Cloud data to Snowflake. A virtual table is like a window into data in a database, but instead of copying and storing actual data, a virtual table only contains the <em>structure<\/em> of the data. It&#8217;s a blueprint or pointer to the right place in the CDP to get the data \u2013 but the data itself stays in the CDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is possible to query live data in Salesforce from Snowflake and ensure that changes in the Salesforce objects will be reflected in Snowflake,\u201d explained Salesforce Data Cloud product manager Sriram Sethuraman. \u201cThis will empower developers and data scientists to build machine learning models and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/marketing\/ai\/guide\/\">AI-powered applications<\/a> on top of the Snowflake platform by joining Salesforce and Snowflake data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(<a href=\"#TOC\">Back to top<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"datawarehousetocdp\">How it works: from data warehouse to CDP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we are inside our CDP and would like to access data that is sitting in our data warehouse. This process is sometimes referred to as <em>data federation<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of good reasons to do this. Data warehouses like Snowflake and Google BigQuery usually contain a massive amount of data, including transactional data like purchases, and product data. Although not typical &#8220;customer&#8221; data, such information can be very useful when trying to calculate a customer&#8217;s loyalty status or build a recommendation based on details about products they buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, here\u2019s how you can access data warehouse data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/blog\/marketing-world-tour\/\">in Salesforce Data Cloud<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Salesforce Data Cloud mounts tables from the data warehouse as external data lake objects.
