{"id":6855,"date":"2021-02-11T08:00:17","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T16:00:17","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2021-02-11T08:00:17","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T16:00:17","slug":"progress-so-far-on-racial-equality-and-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/stories\/progress-so-far-on-racial-equality-and-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Progress So Far on  Racial Equality and Justice \u2014 Reflecting During Black History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: <i>This post was updated on February 19 to reflect the correct figure at the time for URM attrition.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">February is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/black-history-month-workplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black History Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 a time to honor the largely untold history of the Black community while also taking action to build Black futures. An important part of this is carrying forward the legacy of those who fought before us to reach true racial equality and justice. Last year we endured a global pandemic that revealed some of society\u2019s deepest inequalities, while at the same time facing a reckoning of racial injustice, violence, and hate that has persisted for far too long.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. \u2014 \u201cout of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope.\u201d \u2014 we saw that in the midst of the darkness, the light became the way that people around the globe began to speak up and show up for racial equality. The conversations seemed to move past whether or not there was a problem \u2014 to how do we collectively solve the problem and create a better world.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a company, industry, and business community we were called to act. Led by our values, we formed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/company\/equality\/racial-equality-justice-taskforce\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Racial Equality and Justice Task Force<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to help drive systemic change in our workplace and community across four P\u2019s \u2014 people, purchasing, philanthropy ,and policy. Our task force \u2014 led by some of our most senior executives and made up of employees at every level including leaders from our Black employee resource group \u2014 went right to work. We deeply listened to the communities impacted, we set <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/our-next-actions-on-racial-equality-and-justice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">goals and metrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to track success, we committed funding to the work, we stood up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/our-2020-annual-equality-update\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new programs and processes,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/our-quarterly-equality-update-february-2021\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">empowered leaders to drive change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though we know there is much more work ahead, it is encouraging to see how much has been accomplished in six months \u2014 truly demonstrating the power of community, intention, inclusion, and direct action. We are incredibly grateful for our employees who dedicated their time and energy to this important work and to all those around us who continue to inspire and lead the change. This work is ongoing, here is a look at our progress so far: <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>People<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are intentional about building an equitable workplace that looks like society and where everyone can succeed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Goal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Double U.S. Representation of Black Leaders and Increase U.S. Representation of Underrepresented Minority (Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Multi-racial)&nbsp; employees and leaders by 50% by 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" async src=\"https:\/\/play.vidyard.com\/embed\/v4.js\"><\/script><img decoding=\"async\"  style=\"width: 100%; margin: auto; display: block;\"  class=\"vidyard-player-embed\"  src=\"https:\/\/play.vidyard.com\/yv7PgtVNLDrsvdVCp87UXf.jpg\"  data-uuid=\"yv7PgtVNLDrsvdVCp87UXf\"  data-v=\"4\"  data-type=\"inline\"  data-width=\"500\"  data-height=\"187\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the last year, U.S. representation of Black leaders has increased by more than 50% \u2014 albeit off of a small base. Overall U.S. Black representation is up from 2.9% in 2019 to 3.4%&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As noted in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/our-quarterly-equality-update-february-2021\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">most recent quarterly update,<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">over the past year, our percentage rate of URM hiring is up more than 40%. We saw our greatest increase in Black hiring representation. In January 2020,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black candidates made up 3.9% of hires vs. 7.2% as of January 2021. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As reported in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/equality-annual-update\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">our end of year company update<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, URM attrition was down 27% year over year. That said, we need to more fully understand the possible impact of the current health crisis on this trend.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Launched our first-ever Diversity Recruiting and Sourcing Team and URM referral program resulting in more than 250 hires to date. Piloted first-ever Inclusive Hiring recruiter and interviewer training for over 1,000 participants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hosted a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/org62.lightning.force.com\/lightning\/r\/0D50M00004r9SnHSAU\/view\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Racial Equality Ally Training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for almost 7,000 employees, and also conducted<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.video.ibm.com\/channel\/23809926\/video\/128385625\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inclusive Promotions Training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that addressed bias and microaggressions for over 6,000 managers and ESBPs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Launched the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Warmline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an employee advocacy program for URM and women employees. To date, we\u2019ve had more than 200 cases to date. The Warmline enables employees to have confidential conversations with advocates focused on belonging, equity, and career navigation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Expanded our URM development program in partnership with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elcinfo.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Executive Leadership Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including our first-ever manager learning sessions for more than 200 participants and our Tableau colleagues. Scaled our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/mentorship-workplace-racial-equality\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Equality Mentorship Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for employees of color to include 600+ participants including our Tableau colleagues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read more in our<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/our-2020-annual-equality-update\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nnual Equality Update.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Philanthropy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We support organizations driving real, long-term change within the communities.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Goal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">$200 million and 1 million volunteer hours committed to organizations driving racial equality and justice over the next five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44523\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44523\" class=\"wp-image-44523 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2023\/12\/family.png?w=750\" alt=\"family\" width=\"750\" height=\"496\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-44523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hamilton Families, a Salesforce Foundation grantee. Photo by Robin Hultgren.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Drove nearly $23M in donations to advance economic opportunity, increase civic engagement, and promote systems change and resilience among Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities. This included supporting organizations&nbsp; such as the&nbsp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.robinhood.org\/the-power-fund\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robin Hood Foundation Power Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gopaladin.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Go Paladin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/talktechassociation.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talk Tech Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/missionassetfund.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mission Asset Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policylink.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PolicyLink<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">among others. Learn more about our strategy and what\u2019s driving this work here.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/press-releases\/2020\/08\/11\/salesforce-announces-work-com-for-schools-and-20-million-to-help-schools-reopen-safely-and-support-student-learning-anywhere\/#:~:text=The%20company%20is%20also%20granting,and%20connected%20learning%20from%20anywhere.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Donated $20M to five U.S. public school districts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, empowering them to provide equitable, safe, and connected learning from anywhere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provided $10,000 grants to 180 San Francisco small businesses to extend support in light of COVID-19. By partnering with the San Francisco African American Chamber and others, we gave grants to a diverse group of business owners and communities, including 50% women, 22% Black, 30% Latinx, and 13% LGBTQIA business owners.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-provides-10000-grants-to-san-francisco-small-businesses-still-in-need-of-support\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn more.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delivered over 80,000 racial equality and justice-related employee volunteer hours and launched a new volunteering partnership with the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nul.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Urban League<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Supported the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-and-eat-learn-play-announce-new-partners-funding-and-scope-of-pilot-program-to-address-food-insecurity-in-the-bay-area\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">launch and scaling of a pilot program to address food insecurity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in partnership with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eatlearnplay.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eat. Learn. Play<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ousd.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oakland Unified School District<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wck.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">World Central Kitchen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and others, delivering nearly 500,000 pounds of farm-fresh produce from local, minority-owned farms and serving more than 32,000 mostly (85%) Black and Latinx low-income families.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tableau Foundation invested&nbsp; $<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5.4 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to date in grants to 22 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">equity focused nonprofits who are using data to highlight systemic inequities and shape policy proposals for change.&nbsp; These grants combined software, training and financial support to these organizations, including new three-year partnerships with:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> PolicyLink, Urban Institute and the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, Measures for Justice and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys , and Urban Institute and Georgetown University .&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Purchasing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We empower Black, Latinx, and Indigenous businesses and entrepreneurs to close the racial wealth gap.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Goal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">$100 million committed to Black-owned businesses and&nbsp; $100 million committed to Underrepresented Minority founders through Salesforce ventures over the next five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44526\" style=\"width: 759px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44526\" class=\"wp-image-44526 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2023\/12\/gallery.png?w=749\" alt=\"gallery\" width=\"749\" height=\"421\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-44526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Safiya Miller, founder of SAFIYA MILLER, Rod Benson, founder of Rod Benson Art, Danielle Leslie, founder of Culture Add\u2122 Labs, Wal\u00e9 Forrester, CEO and co-founder, Hustle Clean, Dr. Kari Williams, owner of Mahogany Hair Revolution, Cliff Worley, Digital Marketing Expert<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spent $135 million with minority-owned businesses to date with significant spend increases with Black-owned businesses expected in Q4 FY21 and throughout FY22<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensured that all bid proposals and contract terms include terms that require our suppliers to engage URM suppliers in their procurement efforts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Established payment terms for 340 small businesses that reduced the processing time for payment by 30 days, positively impacting their cash flow and ability to pay expenses and develop new business.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the last year, Salesforce Ventures doubled the number of companies in its portfolio led by Black and LatinX founders including innovative leaders such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Donnel Baird<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blocpower.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BlocPower<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Melissa Bradley of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ureeka.biz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ureeka<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abner Mason of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/consejosano.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ConsejoSano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Salesforce Ventures continued to invest in companies that break down systemic barriers such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/flockjay.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flockjay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an online academy that trains and re-skills job seekers from non-traditional and underrepresented backgrounds for future-proof jobs in tech sales, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">significantly increasing their income in 12 weeks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blackventureinstitute.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Venture Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, co-founded by Salesforce Ventures, alongside BLCK VC and Operator Collective, was launched to increase the number of Black check writers in venture capital by 5x in three years. The program hosted its first cohort of 50 operators last fall and the second cohort takes place in April 2021. You can express interest <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blackventureinstitute.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Policy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We use our platforms to help drive systemic change at every level of society.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Goal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Advocate for police reform, civic engagement, and economic empowerment policies<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44529\" style=\"width: 757px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44529\" class=\"wp-image-44529 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2023\/12\/vote.png?w=747\" alt=\"vote\" width=\"747\" height=\"501\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-44529\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salesforce BOLDforce Atlanta members volunteering at a polling location, Georgia<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Advocacy in Action: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guided by our policy platforms, we set a foundation of sharing our positions at the federal level, and we successfully advocated for three police reform initiatives in both California and Indianapolis which are now law. We also continued our support for meaningful hate crimes legislation &#8211; including assisting with corporate coalition building, advocating for the successful passage of a law in Georgia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Establishing Policy Platforms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Task Force Policy Committee established our policy recommendations on police reform, criminal justice reform, protecting and expanding voting rights. These platforms provide a roadmap for our education and advocacy efforts across the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Protecting and Expanding Voting Rights:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We hosted a three-part employee speaker series, \u201cVoting in the U.S.\u201d including an event dedicated to expanding and protecting voting rights. We joined a coalition<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/org62.lightning.force.com\/lightning\/r\/0D53y00004wGU0pCAG\/view\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">op-ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to encourage Indiana to allow no-fault mail-in absentee voting for the November 3, 2020 election.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Civic Engagement:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We continued our partnership with the non-partisan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/turbovote.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TurboVote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, providing employees with text and email reminders about voting deadlines and resources. This year, we<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/news\/article\/Salesforce-CEO-gives-all-employees-election-day-15576293.php\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the ability for employees to work as non-partisan poll workers on election day, and to count it towards Volunteer Time Off (VTO). Nearly 700 employees signed up to volunteer as poll workers across 33 states for the November 3, 2020 election. We hosted employee forums with candidates for office and even launched the public <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trailhead.salesforce.com\/en\/content\/learn\/modules\/civic-engagement-in-the-united-states-public\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Civic Engagement in the US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> module on Trailhead.
