We\u2019re seeing it unfold right now with the rapid adoption of AI. Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/opinion\/gallup\/510635\/three-four-americans-believe-reduce-jobs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only 21% of Americans trust businesses to use AI responsibly<\/a>, which means the vast majority have serious reservations regarding the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While trust in new technologies can be hard-won, the auto industry offers a valuable lesson for any company\u2019s AI roadmap: safety sells. For example, although there was initial resistance to seat belts because they were viewed as uncomfortable and restrictive, federal laws mandating the inclusion of seat belts and state laws requiring their use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1751815\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changed public expectations<\/a>. Today, people can\u2019t imagine buying a car without seat belts and airbags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see this same lesson playing out with AI-enabled auto safety features versus self-driving cars. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/mobility\/en\/research-analysis\/consumers-desire-automated-safety-over-selfdriving-tech.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to a recent survey<\/a>, only 47% of consumers would consider riding in and purchasing a car with self-driving technology. However, more than 80% value AI-powered safety features like radar cameras, real-time sensors, and warning systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For over 100 years, the automotive industry has tapped into \u201csafety culture\u201d as new technology comes to the forefront. His research found that organizational culture and safety are inextricably linked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/minerva.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/EN\/content\/minerva\/113fdcd8-a30a-4b58-991c-d5a9d268e92a\/201609mjv_safety_culture_nlsafety_culture_and_accidents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many tragic accidents<\/a> have identified a lack of safety culture as a root cause, including the Chernobyl meltdown (1986), the Challenger (1986) and Columbia (2003) space shuttle explosions, and the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion (2010). More recently, an inadequate safety culture was linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/investigations\/accidentreports\/reports\/har1903.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a fatal self-driving car accident<\/a> in Arizona (2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just physical systems like oil rigs and cars that require a strong safety culture. AI implementation carries serious safety concerns as well. We\u2019ve seen facial recognition systems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/why-weve-never-offered-facial-recognition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misidentify people of color<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/stories\/what-is-generative-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generative AI<\/a> models <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/05\/25\/generative-ai-antisemitism-bias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spread disinformation and hate speech<\/a> \u2014 and new risks are still evolving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-tenets-of-a-safety-culture\">5 tenets of a safety culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If AI is going to be successful, it needs to be safe and trustworthy. Hudson identified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightsafetyaustralia.com\/2017\/08\/safety-in-mind-hudsons-culture-ladder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five aspects of a safety culture<\/a> that must also underpin an ethical technology culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Leadership:<\/strong> Leadership is critical to building and maintaining a safe and ethical culture. It sets the tone for the organization and can enforce trustworthy AI through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/stories\/generative-ai-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guidelines<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/stories\/ai-acceptable-use-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guardrails<\/a>, and incentives.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respect:<\/strong> For a safety culture to succeed, all individuals within an organization must feel empowered to call out errors and raise concerns \u2014 regardless of hierarchy. At Salesforce, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/how-salesforce-is-building-a-culture-of-responsible-technology-and-why-it-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we provide anonymous channels<\/a> where employees can raise ethical use concerns.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mindful: <\/strong>Complacency leads to accidents. To build a culture of safety, everyone must be alert and ready for the unexpected. For AI, this means considering its unintended consequences and building checks and reviews into the development lifecycle to mitigate risk.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Just and Fair:<\/strong> Ensuring safety means establishing clear rules about what is and is not acceptable \u2014 and applying them consistently. At Salesforce, for example, our general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/content\/dam\/web\/en_us\/www\/documents\/legal\/Agreements\/policies\/ExternalFacing_Services_Policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acceptable Use Policy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/content\/dam\/web\/en_us\/www\/documents\/legal\/Agreements\/policies\/ai-acceptable-use-policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI Policy<\/a> clearly outline how our technologies are to be used (and not used).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Learning:<\/strong> A strong safety culture adapts and implements necessary reforms based on lessons learned. This will be particularly important in the era of AI, given the rapid pace of innovation. Last year, we created <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2023\/06\/managing-the-risks-of-generative-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guidelines for responsible generative AI<\/a> to class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-an-ai-safety-culture-nbsp\">Building an AI safety culture&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hudson\u2019s tenets form a solid foundation for an AI safety culture, but given the powerful and rapidly evolving capabilities of AI, I believe we need to implement three additional principles:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. It Takes a Village <em>and<\/em> a Final Attestor:<\/strong> When AI is added to human systems, prominent AI researcher Andreas Matthias says a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/document?repid=rep1&amp;type=pdf&amp;doi=05c08de1bf91cd52ea1d22e7238e33958b574a23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responsibility gap<\/a>\u201d emerges. Who is not just legally but <em>morally<\/em> responsible when something goes wrong? Is it the end user accepting an AI recommendation, the developer who developed the model, or someone else? Safety, like ethics, is a team sport that requires everyone to be responsible for their contribution. But to bridge that responsibility gap, an accountable individual is <em>also<\/em> needed to attest that an AI system has been robustly tested and is safe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Empowering a Human at the Helm:<\/strong> If we want to empower a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/building-trust-in-ai-needs-a-human-touch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human at the helm<\/a>\u201d to provide a secure backstop, we must provide people with the time, information, and controls to effectively oversee AI systems. This means providing reasons and citations for AI recommendations and controls that allow people to override a system when necessary. By doing this, we ensure that AI is a safe and powerful assistant \u2014 working with us rather than without us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Establishing Clear Definitions and Standards:<\/strong> Many people working in the AI field are familiar with concepts of accuracy, bias, and robustness. However, we do not have agreed-upon definitions or standards to clearly determine when an AI model or system is \u201csafe enough\u201d \u2013 which makes it exceedingly difficult to build trust or ensure safety in these systems. In the last year, we\u2019ve seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/au\/news\/stories\/ai-executive-order-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significant AI regulatory momentum around the world<\/a>, but the industry is still baby-stepping toward crafting a shared definition of safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deepening trust in AI<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With each innovation cycle, there is always great debate about setting safety standards and guardrails. But time and again, we\u2019ve seen that consumers are willing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/mobility\/en\/research-analysis\/consumers-desire-automated-safety-over-selfdriving-tech.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pay a bit more<\/a> if they feel they can trust a product\u2019s safety.
