Last night the two men competing for the Oval Office met on stage at the University of Denver for the first presidential debate of the 2012 election. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney traded barbs and facts in an exchange that covered domestic political issues including the economy, healthcare, and the role of government.

The volume of data produced by the use of social media platforms gave the public, as well as social media teams on both campaigns, the ability to see and engage in conversations in real time, revealing everything from sentiment to hashtags to new Twitter handles, even.
