It is possible to turn a marketing faux pas, such as typos, product issues, and poor messaging, into genuine opportunities to connect with your target audience.<\/p>\n<p>Your ideal customers are looking for companies that are genuine and quick to fix mistakes. Consumers are savvy: Trying to cover up a mistake and hoping it goes away can make it much worse. Instead, use the opportunity to gain customer trust. Examples include addressing a customer by the wrong name in an email blast, or customers seeing the placeholder of [FIRSTNAME] due to an autofill glitch. Even though customers know you send emails out to many people, they may take it personally when there are errors in communication.<\/p>\n<h3> 6 Steps to Writing the Perfect Apology<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Include a summary of the issue<\/li>\n<li>Sincerely apologize<\/li>\n<li>Share how this incident does not match the quality your company tries to uphold<\/li>\n<li>Explain the error<\/li>\n<li>Let them know what is being done to fix it<\/li>\n<li>Give personal contact information of the employee handling the issue\n<ol>\n<li>If the customer has more questions they want answered, they can contact someone directly<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/Marketing-Faux-Pas-001.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>If a customer emails you with an error concerning their account, whether it\u2019s their name or other personal information, it\u2019s important to communicate how badly the company feels for this error. A touch of human humility goes a long way to remedy this mistake.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectapology.com\/customer-apology-letter.html\">PerfectApology.com<\/a>, the right customer apology letter for a mistake needs to include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A summary of the issue<\/li>\n<li>A sincere apology and statement of quality that the company tries to uphold<\/li>\n<li>An explanation of the error<\/li>\n<li>What is being done to fix it<\/li>\n<li>Personal contact information of the employee handling the issue in case the customer has more questions they want answered directly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the length of your apology will depend on the error, it\u2019s important that it gets the point across succinctly. Make sure to send it as soon as possible. Customers will appreciate your speedy reply and apology.<\/p>\n<p>In order to remedy the problem, do what it takes to make it right. This might be letting the customer keep the wrong product, or giving them an exclusive coupon code or gift card for causing an inconvenience. <\/p>\n<p>Going above just apologizing is what makes the interaction memorable for the customer. Any company can say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d It takes a great company to say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, and here\u2019s what I\u2019m doing to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Insensitive Messaging<\/h3>\n<p>In the fire hydrant of content and offers on the Internet, there are more chances than ever to accidentally send out a marketing message or image that may be taken in a way that wasn\u2019t intended. A simple social media post can go wrong if there aren\u2019t enough checks and balances in place to catch sensitive issues, or if you don\u2019t have someone to consult to make sure the message can\u2019t be construed as something beyond the desired intent.<\/p>\n<p>One example of a company that experienced this is Huggies, who, despite the issue, rebounded and found success. In 2012 it experienced a backlash after releasing a commercial called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/news-gallery\/advertising-branding\/20-biggest-brand-fails-2012-146137#huggies-17\">\u201cDad Test,\u201d<\/a> which portrayed fathers in what was perceived as a negative light. After consumer complaints, Huggies altered the campaign, met with angry fathers at the Dad 2.0 Summit, and issued an apology on its Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, Huggies made international news after its \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adforum.com\/creative-work\/ad\/player\/34487895\/dads-pregnant-too\/huggies\">Dad\u2019s Pregnant Too<\/a>\u201d campaign, which featured men and their pregnant significant others wearing specially designed belts that let them feel when their baby moved. It was estimated that the campaign reached 180 million online readers. It became a trending topic on Twitter, got almost 3 million shares on Facebook, and had over 5 million organic views on YouTube. Huggies saw an increase in site visits of 264 per cent. Diaper sales grew by 13 per cent and the company \u201cregained leadership in the newborn segment.\u201d Huggies\u2019 new point of view? \u201cNothing compares to the feeling of being a father.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>How Huggies Turned a Marketing Mistake into Something Positive<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>After Huggies released a commercial some fathers found offensive\n<ul>\n<li>They altered the campaign<\/li>\n<li>Met with upset customers at a conference<\/li>\n<li>Sincerely apologized <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A year later, the company released \u201cDad\u2019s Pregnant Too\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>Huggies created two specially designed belts<\/li>\n<li>A man wore one, and his pregnant significant other wore the other<\/li>\n<li>When the baby moved, the belts simulated the movement so the father could feel it, too<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The second campaign went viral internationally\n<ul>\n<li>180 million impressions online<\/li>\n<li>Became a trending topic on Twitter<\/li>\n<li>Almost 3 million shares on Facebook<\/li>\n<li>Over 5 million organic views on YouTube<\/li>\n<li>Increase in site visits of 264%<\/li>\n<li>Diaper sales rose by 13%<\/li>\n<li>Regained leadership in the newborn segment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/Marketing-Faux-Pas-003.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>No matter the faux pas, it\u2019s important to take customer\u2019s concerns into serious consideration. Even if it wasn\u2019t the company\u2019s intention to insult or hurt feelings, what matters most is how the customers feel.<\/p>\n<p>In order to fix insensitive messaging, remove the product or advertisement. Many companies send a donation to a related organization. However, to ensure the donation wasn\u2019t made just to quiet complaints, a sincere, heartfelt apology for the mistake on the company\u2019s blog and\/or social media can show customers that the company has learned from their mistake. Outlining steps or processes to ensure that it won\u2019t happen again can also help restore customer faith in a product.<\/p>\n<h3>Groan-Worthy or Cheesy Marketing<\/h3>\n<h3>When Marketing Unexpectedly Goes Viral<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cJake from State Farm\u201d commercial originally aired in 2011 and is still being shown today<\/li>\n<li>Inspired:\n<ul>\n<li>Memes<\/li>\n<li>Parody videos<\/li>\n<li>Halloween costumes<\/li>\n<li>An official account for the character<\/li>\n<li>A remake of the commercial with Saturday Night Live\u2019s Coneheads characters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If your marketing takes on a life of its own:\n<ul>\n<li>Itake it as a compliment<\/li>\n<li>Use it as an opportunity to connect with your customers<\/li>\n<li>Embrace the questions and jokes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/Marketing-Faux-Pas-002.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>It can happen to any company: marketing that crosses the line into cheesy. Or a tagline that is meant to be serious isn\u2019t taken that way. While this isn\u2019t a mistake as much as an unfortunate circumstance, it provides the opportunity to take something that was misconstrued, and has grown into something bigger or different than you expected, and make it work in your marketing mix.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, something as nuanced as the way a person says a phrase in your commercial can catch on and turn into an internet wildfire. MailChimp experienced just that with its famous ad that plays before every <i>Serial <\/i>podcast episode. The ad was meant to poke fun at the way people pronounce MailChimp\u2019s name, but neither the <i>Serial <\/i>producers nor MailChimp were expecting so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vocativ.com\/culture\/media\/mailchip-serial\/\">many people to embrace it<\/a> as a part of pop culture.<\/p>\n<p>If someone takes your advertising and turns it into a joke or meme, if possible, it\u2019s best to take it as a compliment, not an insult. The companies that are best at connecting with their customers embrace how their user base feels about their marketing. In MailChimp\u2019s case, not only did the company keep the ad unchanged for the second season of <i>Serial<\/i>, they also created several memes on Instagram and other social media profiles that embraced users\u2019 questions and jokes about the ad. This is a good example of a way to handle a critique of your company\u2019s marketing or advertising campaigns.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/175673018&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;visual=true\">&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;nbsp;<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>State Farm\u2019s \u201cJake From State Farm\u201d commercial has also become something more than its marketing department could ever have expected. It has turned into a pop culture phenomenon, with memes and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/alfredmaskeroni\/12-crazy-weird-jake-from-state-farm-vine-parodie-ykmj#.ew5GYxEZJJ\">parodies<\/a> on platforms like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.funnyordie.com\/topic\/state-farm-spoof\">FunnyorDie<\/a>, YouTube, and Vine. While the commercial was obviously intended to be funny, State Farm has embraced the audience making it their own through parodies. It even maintains active <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jakestatefarm\">Twitter<\/a> and Instagram accounts for \u201cJake From State Farm\u201d that uses the same kind of voice and humor that people have taken from the commercial. While State Farm may have not anticipated becoming the object of jokes and parodies, the fact that they weren\u2019t defensive, and instead embraced how their customers took the message, made all the difference.<\/p>\n<p>Accepting and going with your customers\u2019 feelings about your products, marketing, and advertising is crucial to fixing any faux pas that might happen.
