It\u2019s a misconception that says success and innovation are born from isolated people acting alone, who are possessed of singular courage and original genius. People like Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, and Larry Page are famous for their inventions and innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe this idea because it\u2019s seductive: It feeds our egos. Just about everything in our culture reinforces it. The truth, however, is that greatness\u2014great products, great businesses, great insights, and even great cures\u2014don&#8217;t come from &#8220;I.&#8221; They come from &#8220;we.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever our business, problem, malady, or ailment, <i>collaboration is the cure<\/i>. The idea that working alone and rejecting outside help and influence is the best method for dealing with challenges is a lie. Collaboration is the answer to improvement in our businesses and in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/form\/demo\/crm-chatter-demos.jsp?d=701300000021GIL&amp;701300000021GIQ\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/chatter-cta.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"Take action at the speed of social.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-collaboration-in-business\"><b>Collaboration in Business<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How is isolation killing our businesses? The greatest modern example was James Watson and Francis Crick&#8217;s discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA. Robert Cialdini, in his insightful book <i>Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive<\/i>, writes of an interview with Watson on how this world-changing discovery was made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, he presents the traditional list of factors leading to success that we might expect, like clearly identifying the problem, being passionate and single-minded, and a willingness to &#8220;embrace and attempt approaches that were outside the area of familiarity.\u201d But then Watson reveals the true key: \u201cRosalind [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/aso\/databank\/entries\/bofran.html\">Franklin<\/a>, the world\u2019s leading expert at the time] was so intelligent that she rarely sought advice. And if you\u2019re the brightest person in the room, then you\u2019re in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson and Crick, on the other hand, because they <i>weren\u2019t <\/i>the most intelligent or the brightest people in the room, had to rely on each other. Walter Isaacson\u2019s most recent book <i>The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution<\/i>, revolves around the necessity of collaborative work. As he explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of the innovations of the digital age were done collaboratively. There were a lot of fascinating people involved, some ingenious and a few even geniuses. This is\u2026 a narrative of how they collaborated and why their ability to work as teams made them even more creative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inventors mentioned previously\u2014Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, and Larry Page\u2014are not solely responsible for their successes. Edison Electric Light Company was only possible because of the financial backing from wealthy investors like J.P. Morgan and the Vanderbilt family, as well as previous research and innovation from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/43424-who-invented-the-light-bulb.html\">other inventors<\/a> who came before him. Steve Jobs had Steve Wozniak to help him in Apple\u2019s humble beginnings, and Larry Page cofounded Google with Sergey Brin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaboration breeds creativity and inspires world-changing advancements. A number of companies are built at their core <i>to maximize innovation by maximizing collaboration<\/i>. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, spoke at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/dreamforce-2015-microsoft-cloud-ceo-satya-nadella-salesforce\/\">Dreamforce<\/a> this year and remarked that \u201cdiversity is an existential need for Microsoft,\u201d which is why his company and Salesforce have partnered together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLeaders today must be able to harness ideas, people, and resources from across boundaries of all kinds. That requires reinventing their talent strategies and building strong connections both inside and outside their organizations,\u201d say Herminia Ibarra and Morten T. Hansen in <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2011\/07\/are-you-a-collaborative-leader\">their article<\/a> for the Harvard Business Review. Collaboration is the cure to stagnant business and to improving innovation. More examples could be discussed, but all this begs the question: What does collaboration have to do with Breast Cancer Awareness Month?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-collaboration-is-the-key-to-surviving-and-thriving\"><b>Collaboration is the Key to Surviving and Thriving<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancer first hit home to me seven years ago: A close friend of mine, Meredith, was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. She wasn\u2019t a smoker. She hadn\u2019t been exposed to hazardous working conditions. And she was in her mid-twenties. She wasn\u2019t an \u201cat risk\u201d person at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancer\u2019s never an easy word, but not being able to point to a cause\u2014a clear \u201chere\u2019s why\u201d\u2014makes it excruciating. So to chronicle her experience and help bring meaning to it, Meredith and her husband Nick started a <a href=\"http:\/\/curtemanity.blogspot.com\/\">blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After nearly a year, and after painful and invasive surgeries and treatments, Meredith was given the diagnosis \u201cin remission.\u201d However, as many of you know, \u201cremission\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cthe end.\u201d In one of her most revealing posts, <a href=\"http:\/\/curtemanity.blogspot.com\/2008\/12\/count-your-blessings.html\">\u201cCount Your Blessings\u201d<\/a>, Meredith wrote, \u201cSince I learned that I was cancer free I have had the most difficulty with depression\u2026 I stopped focusing on surviving\u201d and she was faced with the consequences of her treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To combat her depression, she created a Praise Journal. \u201cI began to write down the wonderful people and things that God has put in mine and Nick&#8217;s lives, and that includes all of you.\u201c What\u2019s striking about the list aren\u2019t the things or events. It\u2019s the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-collaborating-to-end-cancer\"><b>Collaborating to End Cancer<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People rallying around a common goal, like taking care of someone diagnosed with cancer, is similar to businesses collaborating in order to drive innovation. Some companies have taken the extra step and are collaborating in order to help end cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Intel and Oregon Health &amp; Science University (OHSU) have <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.intel.com\/community\/intel_newsroom\/blog\/2015\/08\/19\/chip-shot-intel-and-ohsu-collaboration-cancer-cloud-open-to-developers\">partnered<\/a> to create a platform hospitals and researchers can use to share data in order to make \u201cpotentially lifesaving discoveries.\u201d Their goal is to \u201cadvance cancer research.\u201d They plan to expand their partnership to two more cancer research institutions next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure data-wp-context=\"{&quot;imageId&quot;:&quot;69d85c7cc71a2&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"core\/image\" data-wp-key=\"69d85c7cc71a2\" class=\"wp-block-image wp-lightbox-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/collaboration-002.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"\"\/><button\n\t\t\tclass=\"lightbox-trigger\"\n\t\t\ttype=\"button\"\n\t\t\taria-haspopup=\"dialog\"\n\t\t\taria-label=\"Enlarge\"\n\t\t\tdata-wp-init=\"callbacks.initTriggerButton\"\n\t\t\tdata-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\"\n\t\t\tdata-wp-style--right=\"state.imageButtonRight\"\n\t\t\tdata-wp-style--top=\"state.imageButtonTop\"\n\t\t>\n\t\t\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" fill=\"none\" viewBox=\"0 0 12 12\">\n\t\t\t\t<path fill=\"#fff\" d=\"M2 0a2 2 0 0 0-2 2v2h1.5V2a.5.5 0 0 1 .5-.5h2V0H2Zm2 10.5H2a.5.5 0 0 1-.5-.5V8H0v2a2 2 0 0 0 2 2h2v-1.5ZM8 12v-1.5h2a.5.5 0 0 0 .5-.5V8H12v2a2 2 0 0 1-2 2H8Zm2-12a2 2 0 0 1 2 2v2h-1.5V2a.5.5 0 0 0-.5-.5H8V0h2Z\" \/>\n\t\t\t<\/svg>\n\t\t<\/button><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, asked the Dreamforce 2015 audience, \u201cWhat can we do as a community to improve the world of cancer survivors, to create more survivors, and to improve the biosciences with information science?\u201d His answer: <a href=\"http:\/\/siliconangle.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/16\/moneyball-for-medicine-using-salesforce-in-cancer-research-dreamforce\/\">The Wisdom Study<\/a>. This program is a collaboration between Salesforce, the University of California, San Francisco, and the Athena breast health network. The goal is to learn if a new breast cancer screening method is comparable to annual mammograms. They have lofty goals for the program, and previously, \u201cconducting a study with this many participants would have been unthinkable, but with the Salesforce team behind them, [the head doctor] believes it will be accomplished in just six months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-greatness-comes-from-collaboration\"><b>Greatness Comes from Collaboration<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaboration isn\u2019t just the cure for our businesses. It\u2019s the cure for the problems that affect our very lives. Isolation\u2014professionally and personally\u2014impedes progress.
