Even when your content is of the highest quality and worth readers\u2019 attention, it\u2019s hard to stand out. This is why promotion and outreach has become so important in content marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Make your promotion more effective by reaching out to recognised experts in your industry\u2014who have the audience and credibility\u2014and asking them to share your content. There are easy, yet powerful tactics any business can use to reach out to influencers online, whether you\u2019re an individual or brand. This article will show you how in a 3-step approach.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 1: Discover Influential Leaders Relevant to your Content Topic<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Thanks to an array of platforms at your disposal, this process needn\u2019t be painful. <b>All of these tools work best when you use them together<\/b>\u2014no single one will tell you everything you need to know. Mix and match for best results. <\/p>\n<h4><b>Use Twitter<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.googleguide.com\/advanced_operators_reference.html\">Advanced search operators<\/a> on Twitter work similarly to how they do in Google search. For example, type the phrases, in quotation marks, \u201csmall business\u201d (you can replace this with your chosen keyword) and \u201cthought leader\u201d into the Twitter search box. Then use Twitter\u2019s navigation options to segment your search.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/hurley-001.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"screenshot of twitter\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, there are many other terms you can try instead of \u201cthought leader\u201d, including \u201cinfluencer,\u201d \u201cspeaker,\u201d \u201cForbes top 10,\u201d \u201cForbes top 20,\u201d and \u201ccontributor,\u201d to name a few. <b>You can find more ideas like these in influencers\u2019 profile bio sections.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A few more tips for searching for influencers on Twitter:<i><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the navigation options in Twitter to segment your search.<\/li>\n<li>See what topics the \u201cTop\u201d search results cover as you could include these gems in your content.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Check out people relevant to your search under the \u201cAccounts\u201d tab.<\/li>\n<li>Select \u201cMore options\u201d to refine by date\u2014you will have greater chance of success <b>reaching out to those who have recently posted an article.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Use the extremely handy <a href=\"https:\/\/klout.com\/home\">Klout<\/a> browser add-on to quickly determine an influencer\u2019s social authority.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Use \u2013rt in Twitter searches to exclude retweets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Use Followerwonk<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>This is a great Twitter analysis tool by <a href=\"https:\/\/followerwonk.com\/\">Moz<\/a> that helps you quickly find everyone who works for an organisation. Type in your targeted company and find influencers who work there. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/hurley-002.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"screenshot of follwerwonk\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>Play with the results to find the influencers you want to reach out to. Try sorting by social authority as a gauge, then by largest number of followers. A healthy balance between those two categories and number of tweets is a great indicator of how active the influencer or brand may be. Use the \u201cAnalyze\u201d tab to see who your target influencer is following. <b>It\u2019s highly likely that some of these people are influencers too.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>You can export the results into an Excel document for further segmentation and analysis.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/hurley-003.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"screenshot of followerwronk analysis tab\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>Further down the page you will find lots of in-depth data, segmented by categories such as follower counts, of those who the influencer follows, recency of tweets, and social authority. Analyse the influencer\u2019s followings to gain further insight into Social Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Click the blue numbers to the right to dig down into the data and see the people behind the stats. However, <b>you can highlight everything inside the box and paste into Excel. <\/b>(A nice trick, but it can take a while!)<b><i> <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>Use BuzzSumo<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Discover <a href=\"https:\/\/app.buzzsumo.com\/influencers\">influencers, journalists, and blog writers<\/a> for your topic: BuzzSumo has powerful filtering options you can apply to find influential people. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/Hurley-007.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"screenshot of buzzsumo\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>A few more tips for searching for influencers on Buzzsumo:<i><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sort results by their reply ratio and average retweets, plus highest domain authority if they have a website.<\/li>\n<li>View the recent links they shared so you get a sense of what interests them.<\/li>\n<li>Use the advanced search function similar to how you would in Google.<\/li>\n<li>Click the \u201cAll Links Shared\u201d button to <b>see the influencer\u2019s most popular shared content<\/b>. This is a very powerful feature.<\/li>\n<li>Use the \u201cContent Research\u201d tab to gain valuable insights into a topic of your choice, including which posts and topics are performing best. This will return<b> lots of websites to target for outreach<\/b> and consequent guest blog opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/hurley-008.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"screenshot of buzzsumo's content research tab.\"><\/img><\/p>\n<h4><b>Use Google &amp; The Moz Toolbar<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you\u2019ve just launched a content marketing microsite that aims to provide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.answer-4u.com\/business-time-saving-tips-calculator\/\">tips for small business owners to save time<\/a>. Now you\u2019re looking for effective ways to promote it. For this topic, a great technique you could use is one that harnesses the power of advanced search operators in Google itself. Advanced Search Operators are exceptional for discovering fresh web content on your topic.<\/p>\n<p>Search for recent blog posts on your topic, build a relationship with the writers and see if they will be happy to include a link to your content.<b> The trick here is to add value to their blog post\u2014does your microsite provide a new perspective on their points, or expansion on a particular subject they briefly touched on?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>In the search box, type: inurl:blog \u201csmall business\u201d \u201ctips\u201d -inurl:twitter<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This search says you want \u201cblog\u201d to be in the URL, the page has to contain the phrases \u201csmall business\u201d and \u201ctips,\u201d but they don\u2019t have to be together. You don\u2019t want the URL to contain Twitter this time because you\u2019re looking for websites.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/Hurley-009.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"screentshot of google's SERPs\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/tools\/seo-toolbar\">Moz<\/a> PA (page authority) and DA (domain authority) rank bars to gauge authority of the pages and websites. You can also filter the search by those pages freshly crawled within the last month.<\/p>\n<p>A great way to <b>use this search method is to research your chosen influencers<\/b>\u2014what are they up to? Where else have they written? Who\u2019s mentioned them, and on what topics?<\/p>\n<p><b>For instance, see what <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/about\/team\/randfish\"><b>Rand Fishkin<\/b><\/a><b> has been doing with this search:<\/b> -inurl:moz &#8220;rand fishkin&#8221; &#8220;author&#8221; -inurl:twitter inurl:blog<\/p>\n<p><b>There are <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/44-social-media-tools-recommended-pros\/\"><b>plenty more tools out there<\/b><\/a><b>\u2014try this advanced search: <\/b>&#8220;top * outreach tools&#8221; &#8220;bloggers&#8221;<b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Or search for social tools: <\/b>&#8220;top * social media tools&#8221; &#8220;bloggers&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 2: Source, Gather, and Collate your Findings<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve gathered all recent influencer articles in a list, <b>it\u2019s time to discover their contact details.<i> <\/i><\/b> <b>To find influencer email addresses:<\/b><i> <\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explore their primary social media profiles and bios (keep your mind open as they may be prevalent on varying platforms).<\/li>\n<li>Find these profiles by investigating particular website sections such as Meet the Team and their company\u2019s Blog<b>. <\/b>You can also<b> <\/b>use Google advanced search to find them on Twitter: \u201cinfluencer name\u201d inurl:twitter.com (Replace twitter.com with any social network of choice.)<\/li>\n<li>Use Google advanced search: \u201cinfluencer name\u201d \u201cemail\u201d <b>OR <\/b>\u201cinfluencer name\u201d \u201ccontact\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>If you have no luck searching for contact details online: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Connect with them on LinkedIn and send a tailored direct message.<\/li>\n<li>Follow them on Twitter and publically ask for their email address <b>because \u201cyou would love to gain their input on a project.\u201d <\/b>Don\u2019t be bland; <b>be humorous, quirky, and stand out. <\/b>I personally use funny images to stand out on social media and gain influencers\u2019 attention<b> <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/10\/Hurley-010.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=95\" alt=\"screenshot of an example twitter post\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p><b>Collate the information: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use Excel to manage and sort the data in columns.<\/li>\n<li>Include names, email addresses, Twitter handles and company contact details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Find as much information about the influencer as possible.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This takes time, but the more you know about these guys, the better your chance of receiving a positive outcome.<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 3: Begin your Outreach<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>For Content You\u2019ve Already Created<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Your first point of call is most likely Twitter. It\u2019s hugely accessible, quick and easy\u2014minimal effort is required from either parties. Using Buffer, you can <b>stagger your tweets<\/b> to go out at certain times, making outreach appear much more natural. In addition, their input and status is valuable to you. <b>This mutual benefit can be leveraged to great effect.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Include influencers from the start:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quick option: Create a round-up piece, collecting quotes of influencers from around the web and making a deal of who they are, alongside a prominent mugshot. <b>Link to their social profiles and let them know via social media.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Tailored option: <b>Tweet the influencers and ask them for their inspiring quote<\/b> on your topic of interest.
