That\u2019s why, when Salesforce unveiled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/analytics-cloud\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wave, the Salesforce Analytics Cloud<\/a> at Dreamforce 2014 this week, executives drew particular attention to the user interface of the product.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a game-inspired UI,\u201d Mark Benioff, chairman and CEO, Salesforce, told the keynote crowd in San Francisco. \u201cWe wanted to create the kind of products that all of you are using.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wave Analytics Cloud is designed to take data from a range of sources and help organizations gain insights they can use to gain a competitive advantage. Unlike traditional analytics tools, though, it was created for business users, not just analytical specialists. The interface reflects that, with colors and moving elements that make it fun to use, not just helpful to use.<\/p>\n<p>This concept of creating software as addictive as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.angrybirds.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angry Birds<\/a> has been gaining traction in all kinds of firms across Canada. Sun Life Financial, for example, has been using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.finextra.com\/news\/fullstory.aspx?newsitemid=26481&amp;topic=retail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an online game to break down retirement savings plans<\/a> into a series of \u201cmissions\u201d its customers complete. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamification.co\/2013\/07\/08\/earn-your-wings-air-canadas-successful-gamification-venture-into-loyalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air Canada\u2019s \u201cEarn Your Wings\u201d<\/a> program increased the loyalty of frequent fliers by giving them badges and rewards for miles flown and other activities. The University of Waterloo\u2019s Stratford campus has set up <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/stratford-campus\/research\/engage-lab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a research lab to see how gamification could be used<\/a> in HR, health care and many other fields.<\/p>\n<p>What Wave Analytics Cloud and these projects share is an understanding of why mobile games resonate with people. The best of mobile games are easy to learn, keep you coming back and are ideal for all those in-between, on-the-go moments that come up throughout the day. Those are all traits companies should keep in mind as they build their own apps with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/ca\/platform\/overview\/?d=70130000000lzgS&amp;internal=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salesforce1 Lightning<\/a>, which Salesforce also announced this week.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, people may play games because they want to win, but the big difference between something like <a href=\"https:\/\/zynga.com\/games\/words-friends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Words With Friends<\/a> and a gamified enterprise app is how \u201cwinning\u201d is defined. For business users, it\u2019s not about racking up points or getting a high score. It\u2019s about gaining a deeper understanding about your customers so you can serve them better, sell more to them, and attract more customers like them.
