Gavin Patterson: Towards a Cohesive and Sustainable Post-Pandemic World

What it is: On the World Economic Forum Blog this week, Gavin Patterson, Salesforce President and Chief Revenue Officer, shared his advice on how businesses can navigate beyond the COVID-19 pandemic and build a better society than we had before.

Why it matters: The healthcare crisis and ensuing economic disruption has strained commercial cohesion and cohesion within wider society. The pandemic has laid bare the need for a new, more resilient and inclusive economy. At the same time, the global economy is digitizing – we’re seeing changes happening within weeks and months which in normal circumstances would have come about after years of planning. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a more cohesive and sustainable world.

Gavin Patterson, President & Chief Revenue Officer

How businesses can do this:

  • Tackle inequalities illuminated by the pandemic: “We should prioritise the long term health and wellbeing of citizens, alongside job security, the creation of new employment opportunities and policies that protect society against future shocks including future pandemics and wider challenges such as climate change.”
  • Share a commitment to sustainability: “We need businesses to be brave. Companies need the courage to uproot and reimagine their strategies, prioritizing the long-term economic success and environmental stewardship versus any short-term disruption.”
  • Prioritize training and reskilling: “Our greatest asset is human capital: our people… In digitised economies, everyone’s job will involve some form of digital skills. Tomorrow, those skills will be just as important as the ability to read and write today. To build more inclusive economies, digital training and reskilling must be central.”
