{"id":306,"date":"2022-09-08T20:26:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T20:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/?p=306"},"modified":"2023-10-27T12:42:42","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T12:42:42","slug":"building-digital-mindset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/eu\/blog\/building-digital-mindset\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s time to build a digital mindset before it\u2019s too late"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Take a guess at when a leading construction industry figure made this statement: \u201cOur industry is still rooted in the Victorian era world of analogue transactions, [but] we can perceive the skeleton of a construction industry that builds right the first time, is efficient, and has the ability to create assets that give each customer and indeed society the added value we all want.<sup> [1]<\/sup>\u201d It was 2014. Not that<i> <\/i>long ago but in digital terms, it\u2019s a different era. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Philp from the Mace Group and a key figure on the Government\u2019s BIM Task Group was trying to be optimistic. There\u2019s been progress, but antiquated ideas still govern the industry. We\u2019re still looking to soften the pain of home buying without getting close to even trying to make it the seamless, inclusive, and rewarding experience it should be. The industry\u2019s mindset needs to change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-digital-is-changing-all-sectors-except-ours\"><b>Digital is changing all sectors except ours<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2014 key sectors like TV, <a adhocenable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/uk\/resources\/retail\/#!page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retail<\/a>, and even <a adhocenable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/uk\/resources\/financial-services\/#!page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finance<\/a> have changed radically. We\u2019re streaming movies and shows over the internet; we\u2019re buying almost everything online, and we\u2019re even managing our finances with a few swipes on a smartphone. It all seems perfectly normal. What hasn\u2019t really changed is the way we plan, build, sell, and manage property developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I believe that failure to drive <a adhocenable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/uk\/resources\/digital-transformation\/#!page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digital transformation<\/a> is going to backfire on the sector. IT projects are narrowly focused, far too many legacy systems have outlived their usefulness, and despite talking about using technology to improve the industry, little has changed for customers. They\u2019re not really viewed or treated as \u2018customers.\u2019 That has to change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analogy I use to describe how digital technology is stuck in the past is sports grounds. I remember visiting cricket, rugby and football stadiums where stands had been added or extended in a piecemeal fashion. There was no joined-up thinking. Spectators got a raw deal. The best grounds \u2013 like Old Trafford and Anfield \u2013 had been planned with the future in mind. Anfield now has a bigger, better main stand built on the foundations of the one that preceded it. Old Trafford has grown without losing the power of the bowl in which the world\u2019s leading players can do their thing. We have to think about technology in the same way. Start with a sound strategy and a clear vision of the future: then make sure everything we do is integrated so it delivers a great customer experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ditch-the-bad-processes-digitise-the-good-ones\"><b>Ditch the bad processes, digitise the good ones<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to digitise all our processes. That doesn\u2019t mean subpar ones. That won\u2019t make a difference. If a process isn\u2019t fit for purpose, change it. Put a better digital one in its place. For instance, why not use tech to make servicing properties easier? Leverage the power of your data to ensure your experts are more efficient and can be much more responsive to residents. The data can deliver a complete picture of all the activities that are being done and which need to be done \u2013 in real time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what we\u2019ve been helping built environment customers do here at Salesforce. Our expertise extends way past CRM; we\u2019re actually in the business of digital transformation. And that\u2019s something which the industry needs to \u2018build\u2019 on its traditions and catch up with consumer expectations. We can provide the total visibility that\u2019s needed to build intelligently and sustainably and then create a seamless service which delights customers. The whole industry needs to move faster. Break out of the old mindset and adopt a new and digital one.
