Texting in business: Why it IS a good idea

ZDNET ran an interesting piece this week, “Texting in business: Not a good idea,” and if you know us well, you know that we immediately felt compelled to defend the bad rep Business Messaging was getting! For some, it’s the latest hot topic in tech, but for others it may still be seen as the red headed stepchild of business communications, similar to where email was in the late 90’s, but despite the misconceptions, it continues to make great strides.

Before analyzing the piece further, let’s clarify one thing. While ZDNet explicitly referenced “text messaging for business” in the piece, it’s important to note that we reference texting as just one component of business mobile messaging. At HeyWire Business, we combine the convenience and universal access of SMS text messaging with the rich content and added features of OTT services to create a ubiquitous business messaging experience across all devices, anywhere and at any time.

So, let’s dispel some rumors from the piece:

1. “Text messages can give the impression that what’s being conveyed to a coworker is not important.”

In reality, mobile messages are able to immediately get people’s attention and are far more likely to produce prompt action. Consumers respond to text messages in about 90 seconds versus over two days on average for emails. Your message is equally as important over text and more likely to get a fast response.

2. “Work communications done with both texting and email don’t send a cohesive image for work teams.”

Today’s workplace is multi-faceted. We use a variety of ways to communicate with one another, as we’re no longer limited to our office environment. Teams can be communicating via video conferencing, email, text, and voice from across the globe. We need adaptable communications to be able to effectively work as a team. In this increasingly mobile workforce, email is no longer as effective, efficient, and is limited to a desk environment — we need a more responsive communication tool, like messaging.

3. “Email leaves a digital paper trail for both sender and recipient that resides with all email about work.”

Luckily, there is a technical solution to this 2-pronged problem. First, with the adoption of cloud technologies, especially cloud-based messaging, we now have the ability to store and retrieve messages in the cloud — providing the very necessary digital paper trail needed for business communications.
