But they also have a problem: They frequently present inaccurate information as if it\u2019s correct. Known as \u201cAI hallucinations,\u201d these mistakes occur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datanami.com\/2023\/01\/17\/hallucinations-plagiarism-and-chatgpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to 20% of the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know [current generative AI] has a tendency to not always give accurate answers, but it gives the answers incredibly confidently,\u201d said Kathy Baxter, principal architect in Salesforce\u2019s ethical AI practice. \u201cSo it can be difficult for individuals to know if they can trust the answers generative AI is giving them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might hear those in the computer science community call these inaccuracies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/hallucinating-confabulating-peter-mcelwaine-johnn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confabulations<\/a>. Why? Because they believe the psychological phenomenon of accidentally replacing a gap in your memory with a false story is a more accurate metaphor for generative AI\u2019s habit of making mistakes. Regardless of how you refer to these AI blunders, if you\u2019re using AI at work, you need to be aware of them and have a mitigation plan in place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-big-trend\">The big trend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People have gotten excited (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/fast-forward-people-are-increasingly-worried-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maybe a little frightened<\/a>, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.uq.edu.au\/project\/trust-artificial-intelligence-global-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when used at work<\/a>) about generative AI and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/blog\/generative-ai-glossary\/#LLM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">large language models<\/a> (LLMs). And with good reason. LLMs, usually in the form of a chatbot, can help you write better emails and marketing reports, prepare sales projections, and create quick customer service replies, among many other things.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"layout-one wp-block-salesforce-blog-offer\">\n\t<div class=\"wp-block-offer__wrapper\">\n\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-offer__content\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-offer__title\"><strong>What is an LLM?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-offer__description\">Large language models (LLMs) are a type of AI that can generate human-like responses by processing natural-language inputs. LLMs are trained on massive datasets, which gives them a deep understanding of a broad context of information. Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/sam-altman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff<\/a> that the ability to even produce hallucinations shows how AI can innovate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fact that these AI systems can come up with new ideas, can be creative, that\u2019s a lot of the power,\u201d Altman said. \u201cYou want them to be creative when you want, and factual when you want, but if you do the naive thing and say, \u2018Never say anything you\u2019re not 100% sure about\u2019 \u2014 you can get a model to do that, but it won\u2019t have the magic people like so much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, it appears we can\u2019t completely solve the problem of generative AI hallucinations without eradicating its \u201cmagic.\u201d (In fact, some AI tech leaders predict <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/08\/01\/can-ai-chatgpt-hallucinations-be-fixed-experts-doubt-altman-openai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hallucinations will never really go away<\/a>.) So what\u2019s a well-meaning business to do? Do not expect the LLM to be your source of truth because it\u2019s not your knowledge base.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/adapt-or-train-your-own-llm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pull information from your own knowledge base<\/a>, you\u2019ll have relevant answers and information at your fingertips more efficiently. There will also be less risk the AI system will make guesses when it doesn\u2019t know an answer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBusiness leaders really need to think, \u2018What are the sources of truth in my organisation?\u2019\u201d said Khoa Le, vice president of Service Cloud Einstein and bots at Salesforce. \u201cThey might be information about customers or products. They might be knowledge bases that live in Salesforce or elsewhere. And you <a href=\"https:\/\/trailhead.salesforce.com\/content\/learn\/modules\/prompt-fundamentals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can learn<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/generative-ai-prompts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">write better prompts<\/a> by following some easy tips. Those include avoiding close-ended questions that produce yes or no answers, which limit the AI\u2019s ability to provide more detailed information. Also, ask follow-up questions to prompt the LLM to get more specific or provide more detailed answers.&nbsp;<br><br>You\u2019ll also want to use as many details as possible to prompt your tool to give you the best response. Tell the LLM to be honest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another game-changing prompt tip is to literally direct the large language model to be honest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re asking a virtual agent a question, in your prompt you can say, \u2018If you do not know the answer, just say you do not know,\u2019\u201d Cheng said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, say you want to create a report that compares sales data from five large pharmaceutical companies. This information likely will come from public annual reports, but it\u2019s&nbsp; possible the LLM won\u2019t be able to access the most current data. At the end of your prompt, add, \u201cDo not answer if you can\u2019t find the 2023 data\u201d so the LLM&nbsp; knows not to make up something if that data isn\u2019t available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also make the AI \u201cshow its work\u201d or explain how it came to the answer that it did through techniques like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.promptingguide.ai\/techniques\/cot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chain of thought<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.promptingguide.ai\/techniques\/tot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tree of thought<\/a> prompting. Research has shown that these techniques not only help with transparency and trust, but they also increase the AI\u2019s ability to generate the correct response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-lessen-the-impact-on-customers\">4. Lessen the impact on customers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le offers some things to consider to protect your customers\u2019 data and business dealings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Be transparent<\/strong>. If you\u2019re using a chatbot or virtual agent backed by generative AI, don\u2019t pass the interface off as if customers are talking to a human. Instead, disclose the use of generative AI on your site. \u201cIt\u2019s so important to be clear where this information comes from and what information you\u2019re training it on,\u201d Le said. \u201dDon\u2019t try to trick the customer.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Follow local laws and regulations<\/strong>. Some municipalities require you to allow end users to opt in to this technology; even if yours doesn\u2019t, you may want to offer an opt-in.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protect yourself from legal issues.<\/strong> Generative AI technology is new and changing rapidly. Work with your legal advisors to understand the latest issues and follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/generative-ai-regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local regulations<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make sure safeguards are in place<\/strong>. When selecting a model provider, make sure they have safeguards in place such as toxicity and bias detection, sensitive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/what-is-data-masking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data masking<\/a>, and prompt injection attack defenses like Salesforce\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/products\/secure-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Einstein Trust Layer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative AI hallucinations are a concern, but not necessarily a deal breaker. Design and work with this new technology, but keep your eyes wide open about the potential for mistakes.
