In response, an overwhelming 85% of the more than 800 manufacturing industry decision makers Salesforce surveyed for its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/resources\/research-reports\/trends-in-manufacturing\/?d=cta-body-promo-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trends in Manufacturing<\/a> report said they must modernize their day-to-day operations to stay competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get there, 97% of manufacturers are pursuing strategic changes, including to their service and aftermarket operations, and 26% characterize them as complete overhauls. These efforts include using new technologies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/artificial-intelligence\/what-is-ai\/?d=cta-body-promo-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/manufacturing-connected-assets-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">connected assets<\/a> \u2014 which includes machinery, industrial equipment, vehicles, and appliances that are equipped with sensors, software, and connectivity capabilities \u2013 to improve and expand service and aftermarket offerings, open new revenue streams, stand apart from competitors, and increase customer loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vidyard wp-block-embed-vidyard\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" async src=\"https:\/\/play.vidyard.com\/embed\/v4.js\"><\/script><img decoding=\"async\"  style=\"width: 100%; margin: auto; display: block;\"  class=\"vidyard-player-embed\"  src=\"https:\/\/play.vidyard.com\/1dMuRfyYmGUwCDxAAQsyBB.jpg\"  data-uuid=\"1dMuRfyYmGUwCDxAAQsyBB\"  data-v=\"4\"  data-type=\"inline\"  data-width=\"500\"  data-height=\"281\"\/>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> Manufacturers face pressure from multiple angles. Fifty-nine percent still experience aftereffects of pandemic-era supply chain disruptions. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/manufacturing-labor-shortage-2033-deloitte-mi-report-2024\/713326\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">workforce challenges<\/a> \u2014 which respondents rank as their top obstacle for growth \u2014 are increasing as retirement surges and a new generation is slow to emerge. Additionally, while disruptive technologies like smart manufacturing and AI bring opportunity for scale and efficiency, they also raise unique challenges.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Data infrastructure and visibility are critical in the age of connected assets<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High-quality, integrated data is important for any company seeking to improve operations, but it\u2019s critical in the manufacturing industry, where partnerships underpin business models and connected assets open doors to new revenue streams, faster time-to-market, and personalized and proactive customer service.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet many teams struggle to bring valuable data insights to frontline employees, with 78% of respondents reporting they spend substantial time searching for information across systems. For example, just 42% of employees at manufacturers leveraging connected asset data have a fully accessible and integrated view of it, and just 43% say the same for telemetry data. This challenge is slated to grow, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/news\/stories\/data-analytics-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">separate study<\/a> forecasting a 22% increase in manufacturing data volume between 2023 and 2024 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"tableau-viz-embed-container \">\n\t<tableau-viz\n\t\tclass=\"tableau-viz-embed\"\n\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/DataAccessibilityforManufacturingEmployees\/Q22dashboard?:language=en-US&#038;:sid=&#038;:redirect=auth&#038;:display_count=n&#038;:origin=viz_share_link\"\n\t\ttoolbar=\"hidden\"\n\t\thide-tabs\n\t><\/tableau-viz>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Manufacturers enter the AI era<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trusted data is key in manufacturing as four out of five respondents are at least experimenting with artificial intelligence, and more than one in three (36%) describe it as already fully implemented in operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the sales, service, marketing, and operations respondents to the survey, generative use cases like content creation are far more common than predictive use cases (74% versus 47%), despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/artificial-intelligence\/what-is-generative-ai\/?d=cta-body-promo-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generative AI<\/a> being relatively new. Yet roughly half or fewer of these initiatives are viewed as having been \u201cvery effective\u201d across a variety of metrics like efficiency, cost reduction, and resiliency from future risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., manufacturers anticipate a continuation of recent <a href=\"https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/a-reshoring-renaissance-is-underway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on- and nearshoring initiatives<\/a>, with 61% expecting more of their products to be manufactured domestically over the next year, and 44% saying the same for materials sourcing.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"tableau-viz-embed-container \">\n\t<tableau-viz\n\t\tclass=\"tableau-viz-embed\"\n\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/RespondentsDescribingSupplyChainModernizationInitiativesasVeryEffectiveAcrosstheFollowingMetrics\/Q27dashboard2?:language=en-US&#038;:sid=&#038;:redirect=auth&#038;:display_count=n&#038;:origin=viz_share_link\"\n\t\ttoolbar=\"hidden\"\n\t\thide-tabs\n\t><\/tableau-viz>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sales and marketing investments are a top priority.<\/strong> A solid majority of manufacturers are investing in service and aftermarket operations that expand revenue streams and fulfill customer expectations for comprehensive solutions such as repair and maintenance services. Yet sales and marketing initiatives are viewed far and away as the top investment priority, with just two out of five respondents surpassing goals like average order value and sales cycle length.
