As the Skill India Mission<\/a> celebrates its 11th anniversary, India stands at a critical juncture, transforming its demographic dividend into a global AI advantage. We speak with Arundhati Bhattacharya<\/a>, President and CEO, South Asia, Salesforce, on building a workforce that does not just participate in the AI economy but architects it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. With the UN-backed AI for Good Global Commission now aiming to build an AI future rooted in trust, how must India\u2019s skilling playbook evolve to ensure our talent is equipped to design the ethical architectures these global frameworks require?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The AI for Good Global Commission<\/a> represents exactly the kind of multilateral ambition this moment demands. Building an AI future rooted in trust and shared access is not a goal any single nation or organisation can achieve alone. And that is precisely where India has a profound contribution to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India has navigated complexity at a scale that few nations have. We built the India Stack<\/a> to be open, interoperable, and inclusive, turning it into a reference model for digital public infrastructure worldwide because we solved a real problem at a real scale. The opportunity now is to bring that same energy to AI governance. By scaling programmes like YuvaAI Bharat<\/a> and platforms like Trailhead, we are ensuring that India’s contribution is not limited to execution. We are building the architects, ethicists, and systems thinkers who will shape trusted AI frameworks for the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. Salesforce’s partnership with AICTE has successfully scaled virtual internships nationwide. Moving forward, as AI agents become collaborative digital colleagues within the enterprise, how is the curriculum evolving to emphasise strategic judgment?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The AICTE<\/a> partnership has given us something invaluable: real signals, at scale, about what students actually know versus what they think they know. What it consistently shows is that the gap is not in technical execution. The gap is in the judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the curriculum is evolving accordingly. We are shifting the measure of success from how many people complete a course to how well they apply what they have learned in real situations. That is exactly why we have released a comprehensive suite of AI curriculum resources and learning pathways specifically designed for higher education institutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hands-on project experience through the AICTE virtual internship programme<\/a> is central to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A future-ready graduate today is not just someone who can code. They are someone who understands data, can work alongside AI, communicates across functions, and walks into their first role already holding verified, employer-recognised credentials on Trailhead<\/a>. Our partnership with SmartBridge<\/a> is a strong example of this in action, furthering the IndiaAI mission<\/a>. Q. As organisations across India scale their AI training initiatives,<\/strong> there’s a high volume of foundational certifications. As automation handles basic execution and prompting, what do genuine, high-value AI skills look like?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Foundational certifications and prompt engineering are excellent starting points for digital literacy, but they are just the beginning. As AI continues to evolve, the greatest value will come from combining technical knowledge with sound judgment, curiosity, and the ability to solve complex problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As AI becomes increasingly capable of handling routine execution, human value shifts to judgment. The people who will create the greatest impact are those who can ask better questions, challenge AI outputs, understand consequences, and take responsibility for decisions. That is why we are embedding AI learning directly into the flow of work through Trailhead<\/a> and our partnerships with YuvaAI Bharat<\/a> and AICTE. The next generation of AI professionals will not be distinguished by how well they use AI. They will be distinguished by how well they lead it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. As AI takes on more routine work, how do we ensure organisations place even greater value on uniquely human capabilities such as creativity, ethical judgment, constructive debate, and deep intuition?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nurturing these qualities sits at the heart of modern leadership. There is a natural tension between valuing human judgment and rewarding speed and efficiency, and being conscious of that tension is the first step to resolving it. While automation optimises operational efficiency, human collaboration creates strategy and vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shift will not happen automatically. It requires leaders who visibly champion human judgment, invite challenge, and reward curiosity. AI can optimise within defined parameters, but people decide whether those parameters are the right ones. Leadership in the AI era is not about having all the answers. It is about asking better questions, exercising sound judgment, and creating an environment where humans and AI achieve more together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. You have built and led some of India’s most consequential workforce transformations: first at SBI, one of the world’s largest banks, and now at Salesforce. What does that rare dual vantage point teach you about what it truly takes to reskill people at scale?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leading workforce transformation at SBI taught me one fundamental truth: scale is not just a number, it is a mindset. When you are reskilling people across geographies, languages, and life stages, you quickly learn that technology alone is never the answer. Trust is. At SBI, we had to meet people where they were, not where we wanted them to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I have come to appreciate more deeply over time is that resistance to reskilling is often less about capability and more about confidence. When roles evolve, people naturally question both their ability to learn and their place in the organisation. The best reskilling programmes find ways to address both, making people feel capable, not just certified.
