But if you take a peek inside the org chart of most large businesses operating today, you\u2019ll likely only find one or maybe a handful of sustainability-focused titles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there\u2019s Salesforce. The company has a whole department devoted to environmental sustainability, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-accelerates-ocean-sustainability-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hired tech\u2019s first oceans director<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/12\/Copy-of-Stat-Card-\u2013-169.png?w=1024\" alt=\"82% of global workers want to help their company operate more sustainably \" class=\"wp-image-58686\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But Salesforce\u2019s commitment to climate action goes well beyond the sustainability team alone. In fact, no matter the department, no matter the job description, and no matter the level, everyone at Salesforce is working toward a separate and somewhat aspirational title: Chief Sustainability Officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Everyone at Salesforce, whether you&#8217;re in Finance or any other part of the company, everyone needs to be a Chief Sustainability Officer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That sentiment was embraced by Joe Allanson, who in 2021 took on the brand-new role of Finance ESG, EVP after nearly two decades at Salesforce (he was employee #380) thanks to a create-your-own-role adventure that Marc Benioff, the company\u2019s Founder and Co-CEO, and Amy Weaver, Chief Financial Officer, put before him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIn this climate emergency, we need everyone to get to net zero as fast as possible. Take Salesforce\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/company\/equality\/equality-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earthforce team<\/a>, which has nearly 10,000 members across the globe and is united by the mission to make a positive impact on the environment through volunteering and other initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, Benioff himself, who has a longstanding vision of helping fight climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cumulative weight behind this effort combined with a climate emergency playing out across the globe requires passion and urgency. That means sustainability careers are an option for Salesforce employees who may have had more \u201ctraditional\u201d roles in the past. Marketing? There\u2019s now a sustainability job for that. Comms? Developer? Procurement? Same \u2013 the opportunities are there to create a planet-friendly career path, no matter your experience. She left that role, but then, something lured her back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came back because Salesforce was really leading in sustainability,\u201d she says of her decision. \u201cThe company was walking the walk and talking the talk, and I wanted to be part of that again.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t a coincidence that the walking and the talking struck a chord for Schlicher.<br><br>\u201cSustainability is my passion in life \u2013 always has been,\u201d she says. \u201cI was the \u2018don&#8217;t waste paper kid\u2019 in school, and really all I&#8217;ve ever wanted to do in life is somehow, in some way, save the world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vidyard wp-block-embed-vidyard\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/embed.vidyard.com\/share\/VyvdZ5pSKMTTYP1sDFnucY?\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With ambition aplenty, Schlicher started off her second Salesforce tenure in a more traditional Success Manager role, but got involved in sustainability efforts where she could \u2014 joining Earthforce, where she became one of the NYC hub leads, and in the following year, elected to the global leadership team. But then another opportunity presented itself, and Schlicher turned that ambition into initiative.<br><br>\u201cI actually invented this job [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/products\/net-zero-cloud\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to bring Net Zero Cloud to market<\/a>] two and a half years ago,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt didn&#8217;t exist at Salesforce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That role is Director of Sustainability Solutions, which she describes as \u201ca combination of a salesperson and a marketer and to go-to-market person\u201d all with an eye toward providing Salesforce customers with the technology, solutions, and strategies they need to get to net zero and achieve their sustainability goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And with programs like <a href=\"https:\/\/trailhead.salesforce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trailhead<\/a> there to educate and empower those passionate about creating climate-centric journeys, the tools and exposure are there for anyone interested to also get involved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s that very passion that opens up doors and keeps people happy, and it\u2019s what Schlicher believes has helped her thrive in her role. And if you\u2019ve got that Capital P type of Passion but maybe don\u2019t have the direct experience yet, don\u2019t sweat it, according to Schlicher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can learn anything, but you can&#8217;t fake passion. You can&#8217;t fake caring about something,\u201d she says, and that\u2019s what she reminds others \u2013 and herself \u2013 each and every day. Because she\u2019s got a big end goal in mind, and she needs all the help she can get from other like-minded people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, the point is to save the world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/12\/AJSRock.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Schlicher at age 8\" class=\"wp-image-58689\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Schlicher pictured at Mt. Monadnock, Jaffrey, NH | Age 8<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-sustainability-is-all-about-community\">When sustainability is all about community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It all started when Bianca Williams was a teenager in Philadelphia. Those please-don\u2019t-litter flyers posted around the neighborhood? Williams put them there. She was also the one rallying her friends to clean up her local community. But leaving extra garbage cans in parks and picking up loose wrappers on her block was just the beginning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat translated later into just being much more conscious of the environment holistically,\u201d Williams says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, she never thought of it as a career. After kick starting her career in marketing, though, the pandemic got her \u201cthinking much more about public policy and sustainability and really making a social impact\u201d with her career.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She saw an open role at Salesforce, and the rest is history: Since April 2021, she\u2019s been the company\u2019s Strategic Marketing &amp; Engagement ESG Manager, where she focuses \u201cprimarily on the mobilization and engagement of our nature-based solutions initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Williams, that means helping the 1t.org initiative, which Salesforce co-founded with the World Economic Forum to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/10-million-trees-milestone-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow, conserve, and restore one trillion trees<\/a> across the world. She\u2019s also looking for employees like her \u2013 the anti-litter kids \u2013 \u201cwho are looking for ways to engage around the world, and want to do their part to protect the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially, she\u2019s trying to create a community to keep a bigger neighborhood \u2013 the planet \u2013 clean, because for Williams, nature equals community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/12\/Image-from-iOS-18.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Williams at team offsite\" class=\"wp-image-58691\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Williams pictured alongside members of the corporate relations team at offsite in March 2022<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love nature, but I don&#8217;t love nature just for the sake of nature,\u201d she explains. \u201cI love how people connect with nature and depend on nature, and I love taking care of nature because nature takes care of us. class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-creating-a-universal-language-for-sustainability\">Creating a universal language for sustainability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from recruiting all the Chief Sustainability Officers that he can, Joe Allanson has another tall task that he\u2019s trying to tackle. And it\u2019s one that, if done right, has an impact that goes far beyond Salesforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I say the word revenue,\u201d Joe Allanson says in his always-upbeat way, \u201cI don&#8217;t care what part of Salesforce you&#8217;re in or what part of the business community you&#8217;re in, we would have a common understanding of what that is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainability and all of its components, though, are a little bit squishier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a common language that we&#8217;re missing in our ability to communicate with investors and with other constituents when we\u2019re talking about sustainability,\u201d he explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allanson\u2019s been there and done this before, having redefined accounting standards for SaaS business models during his two decades in traditional finance. So, he decided that leading the charge to create sustainability\u2019s universal dialect would be central to his role as EVP of ESG Finance. Think revenue and earnings reports, but for sustainability \u2013 which has even more utility than you\u2019d imagine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 90% of global employees surveyed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/sustainability-jobs-training-salesforce-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Salesforce\u2019s latest research<\/a> think easier-to-understand sustainability reporting would help build trust in companies\u2019 commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/12\/Susty-Feature-Graphic.png?w=1024\" alt=\"Factors that would build trust in corporate sustainability commitments\" class=\"wp-image-58687\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>So a little more than a year ago, Allanson traded in his guidebooks on revenue for ones on greenhouse gas and trees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI candidly wish I paid more attention to my science classes in high school and in college,\u201d Allanson says of the transition. \u201cA large part of my job early on was trying to reskill myself here.\u201d<br><br>Urgency forced him to not only be a quick study, but served as motivation for diving right in and getting things right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re dealing with a planetary emergency, so we don&#8217;t have 10 or 20 years to figure a uniform set of standards out. We&#8217;ve got to go now, and that&#8217;s what makes this thing very exciting and very dynamic,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/in\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-08-at-9.54.01-AM.png?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58712\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Allanson, mid-interview, showing off the required reading for his new role<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSalesforce people are all about doing the impossible,\u201d he reflects. \u201cI&#8217;ve never seen us shy away from a challenge. That&#8217;s what makes this thing inspiring and exciting for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-sustainability-meets-opportunity\">When sustainability meets opportunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea that, with the right training, anyone can be a Chief Sustainability Officer may be a critical one in the race to net zero. As businesses struggle to source qualified sustainability talent to meet increasingly ambitious sustainability commitments, data shows that looking inward is a promising strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/sustainability-jobs-training-salesforce-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a recent survey<\/a>, Salesforce found that nearly 7 out of 10 global workers wish they had sustainability-related qualifications. And yet, 88% said a lack of investment in training towards those qualifications is what\u2019s stopping companies from reaching their sustainability goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it turns out, people all over the world <em>want<\/em> to be unofficial Chief Sustainability Officers.
