The rise of streaming, social media, and subscription models over the past decade have turned the industry on its head and fundamentally reshaped customer expectations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as the macro economy enters uncharted waters and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/customer-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consumers reevaluate what\u2019s valuable<\/a>, the industry is under a new level of pressure \u2014 and companies will need to fight for every dollar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To offer insight into this changing landscape, Salesforce conducted a survey of 350 media and entertainment decision makers across seven countries for its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/resources\/research-reports\/media-and-entertainment-industry-insights-report\/?d=cta-body-promo-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Media and Entertainment Industry Insights Report<\/a>. Here\u2019s a sample of key findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-industry-is-focused-on-customer-experience-amid-a-saturated-landscape\"><strong>The industry is focused on customer experience amid a saturated landscape<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Customer experience is paramount to any business strategy, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/customer-engagement-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">86% of consumers<\/a> now saying experience is equally important to product quality. And, with offerings spanning streaming services, broadcasters, gaming platforms, esports, and more \u2014 customer experience is a critical differentiator for the media and entertainment industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, media and entertainment industry professionals surveyed by Salesforce cite increasing competition as their top challenge \u2014 outranking factors such as third-party cookie depreciation, decreasing subscriber values, and the increasing costs from inflationary pressures. As such, improving customer satisfaction (CSAT) is the industry\u2019s top priority. Case in point: A recent Salesforce consumer survey found that while 65% of consumers subscribe to at least one video service, 39% of them felt they weren\u2019t worth the cost. Satisfaction with value was even lower for audio, digital publication, and gaming subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, media and entertainment companies report significant annual customer churn rates \u2014 17% on average \u2014 with higher figures reported among streaming service providers and cable\/satellite TV operators.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"tableau-viz-embed-container \">\n\t<tableau-viz\n\t\tclass=\"tableau-viz-embed\"\n\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/MedianCustomerChurnRateQ13\/Q13dash?:language=en-US&#038;publish=yes&#038;:display_count=n&#038;:origin=viz_share_link\"\n\t\ttoolbar=\"hidden\"\n\t\thide-tabs\n\t><\/tableau-viz>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-web3-the-creator-economy-and-other-trends-are-diversifying-revenue-streams\"><strong>Web3, the Creator Economy, and other trends are diversifying revenue streams<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to providing differentiated experiences that keep customers happy, media and entertainment companies must support a strong bottom line. Advertising remains the leading source of revenue for media and entertainment companies, both in terms of the share of companies that collect advertising revenue, as well as the average revenue per user (ARPU). Yet the outlook on advertising spend is far from positive, with a mere 15% of respondents expecting an increase over the coming 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"tableau-viz-embed-container \">\n\t<tableau-viz\n\t\tclass=\"tableau-viz-embed\"\n\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/AdvertisingSpendOverNext18MonthsvQ21_16794256271590\/vQ21country?:language=en-US&#038;:display_count=n&#038;:origin=viz_share_link\"\n\t\ttoolbar=\"hidden\"\n\t\thide-tabs\n\t><\/tableau-viz>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeking to buck a downturn in advertising spending and capitalize on new technologies and consumer behaviors, media and entertainment companies are actively seeking to diversify their business strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>73% of media and entertainment professionals say their companies have added a new revenue stream within the past year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Influencer marketing is an example of this trend, with 65% of media and entertainment professionals reporting that their companies partner with influencers to promote products and services, attract users to platforms, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/web3-nft-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Web3<\/a> is also getting serious consideration from an array of media and entertainment companies for its ability to drive revenue and offer differentiated experiences. Web3 use cases related to loyalty programs, real-world asset management, and content monetization are seen as having the most promise for the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>38% of media and entertainment professionals say their companies have fully defined and implemented Web3 strategies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-efficiency-initiatives-underpin-automation-investments\"><strong>Efficiency initiatives underpin automation investments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the overall macroeconomic outlook remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/2023\/2\/3\/23584939\/jobs-report-economy-federal-reserve-inflation-recession-jay-powell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decidedly mixed<\/a>, the media industry is already experiencing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/11\/22\/media-layoffs-cnn-disney-economy-jobs-advertising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">downturn<\/a> that\u2019s driving caution in spending. This is reflected in budget outlooks \u2014 64% of survey respondents expect a net increase in overall operating budgets over the coming 18 months, however resources like marketing budgets and headcounts are less likely to see a boost.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"tableau-viz-embed-container \">\n\t<tableau-viz\n\t\tclass=\"tableau-viz-embed\"\n\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/ExpectedChangestotheFollowingOverNext18MonthsQ29\/Q29dash?:language=en-US&#038;publish=yes&#038;:display_count=n&#038;:origin=viz_share_link\"\n\t\ttoolbar=\"hidden\"\n\t\thide-tabs\n\t><\/tableau-viz>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Facing the need to do more with less at the same time they seek to win discerning audiences against fierce competition, media and entertainment companies are focusing in large part on efficiency initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>99% of media and entertainment professionals say their companies are investing in operational efficiency.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Workflow and process automation is a large part of this equation, yet much work remains to be done.
