Over half (57%) of government employees say their job has become more digitized in the last two years, and over one-third (35%) say their agency receives more security threats now than two years ago. As a result, public agencies have a new edict to more effectively protect the data and privacy of their constituents and employees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Over half (57%) of government employees say their job has become more digitized in the last two years, and over one-third (35%) say their agency receives more security threats now than two years ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere should be no distinction between doing the job and doing the job securely,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-cybersecurity-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">William MacMillan<\/a>, SVP of Security, Salesforce. \u201cEmployees can be the first line of defense when it comes to data security. This is even more critical as the use of data, automation, and AI grows in the government sector.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salesforce\u2019s <em>New Era of Data Stewardship in Government<\/em> research explores the hurdles these entities face on their quest for security, and reveals a potential area for improvement in adopting best practices among employees and trusted technologies to help ensure compliance.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-government-employees-assume-their-technology-is-secure\">Government employees assume their technology is secure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As government agencies rely more on technology for their operations and to provide essential services to citizens, organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of protecting sensitive data by embedding security and compliance measures into their technologies and processes. This is especially true as employees assume the technologies, especially their personal devices and use of the internet at work, are secure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over one-third (34%) of government employees say they personally don\u2019t have to worry about security at work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over half (59%) assume if they can access something on their work device, it must be safe.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, over one-third (34%) don\u2019t consider their connected devices (e.g., mobile phone, laptops) to be a cybersecurity risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Almost half (47%) believe that their personal devices are as secure as their work devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><div class=\"wp-block-image__wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"wp-block-image__modal-toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-modal-id=\"1-modal\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Open Image Modal<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/0OmckWIQwmUukbkZDI_5a7p138on9HabS4CA0c23PgAO8K9GKORtmlsOJlI_uGRJBJfejUc9gVoP2TNU3ran6oM9T2A9r6KbJlML9FmzwkgxRs4joMPlSWs26pcWNyrt2sb3nQwyjECHqUhwkfUMalY\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<div id=\"1-modal\" class=\"image-modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"image-dialog-title\"><div class=\"image-modal__overlay\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-a11y-dialog-hide><\/div><div class=\"image-modal__content\" role=\"dialog\"><button class=\"image-modal__close-button\" type=\"button\" data-a11y-dialog-hide aria-label=\"Close this image dialog window\"><svg viewBox=\"0 0 26 25\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" fill=\"currentColor\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><rect x=\".626\" y=\"22.753\" width=\"32\" height=\"3\" rx=\"1.5\" transform=\"rotate(-45 .626 22.753)\"\/><rect x=\"2.747\" y=\".125\" width=\"32\" height=\"3\" rx=\"1.5\" transform=\"rotate(45 2.747 .125)\"\/><\/svg><\/button><h1 id=\"image-dialog-title\" class=\"screen-reader-text\">Image Modal<\/h1>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/0OmckWIQwmUukbkZDI_5a7p138on9HabS4CA0c23PgAO8K9GKORtmlsOJlI_uGRJBJfejUc9gVoP2TNU3ran6oM9T2A9r6KbJlML9FmzwkgxRs4joMPlSWs26pcWNyrt2sb3nQwyjECHqUhwkfUMalY\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-public-sector-workers-may-not-be-as-prepared-for-security-risks-especially-from-new-technologies\">Public sector workers may not be as prepared for security risks \u2014 especially from new technologies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most government employees say that their agency provides them with the resources they need to keep data safe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For instance, 78% of government employees say their agency has the tools and 76% say they have the training needed to keep data secure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also seem to be confident in their knowledge of how to keep data safe, with 73% saying they are familiar with their agency\u2019s security processes and protocols.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these same government employees aren\u2019t always following cybersecurity best practices, and their agencies might not be as protected as they should be \u2014 especially as new technologies like generative AI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/generative-ai-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduce new risks<\/a> to an organization:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One in five (20%) government employees have accidentally clicked on a suspicious link at work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One in four (25%) use the same passwords for personal and work-related log-ins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than a third (36%) have accessed work documents or systems from their personal device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under half use multi-factor authentication (40%) and VPN for online work (42%) every time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than one-tenth (12%) have already experimented with generative AI, like ChatGPT and DALL-E, for work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, only half (50%) check security protocols before trying a new tool or technology, and just 55% feel their security policies keep up with new tools and technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In addition, employees who aren&#8217;t used to doing as much work online feel less prepared to keep data secure and less likely to follow security protocols.
