This higher purpose is best expressed in our drive to establish Equality for All, which means working together to create a world where everyone has equal rights, equal pay for equal work, equal access to education, and equal opportunities for success. It\u2019s not only the right thing to do, it\u2019s good for business.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/impact-of-equality-business-research.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research has shown<\/a>&nbsp;that companies that invest in Equality \u2014 such as diversity programs and equal pay \u2014 and lead with values have a competitive advantage over those who do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Equality begins with each of us. We seek to create workplaces that reflect the communities we serve and a culture where everyone feels valued, heard and included. We are honored to be recognized by Fortune as one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/best-workplaces-for-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best workplaces for diversity<\/a>, but we know there is much more work to be done at Salesforce. As 2017 comes to a close, here are some reflections on our journey over the past year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-increasing-transparency\">Increasing Transparency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We publish our diversity numbers annually on our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/salesforce.com\/equality\/?d=cta-body-promo-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">equality website<\/a>\u00a0to ensure transparency regarding our workforce composition, and to hold ourselves accountable for progress. In June, we also published our 2016 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission\u2019s EEO-1 results, which show race, ethnicity and gender data by job category. We plan to update this report annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we\u2019re updating our diversity numbers as of October 31, 2017. While we\u2019ve made progress on some fronts, there remains much more work to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Women<\/strong>: Women make up 30.9% of our global workforce, up from 30.1% last year. Beyond the 0.8% increase in representation, the overall number of women working at Salesforce increased by 28.3% \u2014 which is nearly 2000 additional female employees. We also increased the number of women in leadership positions by 34.3% \u2014 trending positive for the third consecutive year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Underrepresented Minorities<\/strong>: Underrepresented Minorities make up 9.45% of our U.S. workforce, up from 9.15% last year. This year, we created a diversity scorecard, which we send to our executive team on a monthly basis with their diversity numbers and progress. We have found that this helps our leadership keep Equality top of mind, better understand their teams\u2019 culture and identify where their teams can improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A foundational step on the path to Equality is the hiring process \u2014 a time to reach the most qualified and diverse candidates. There are a few ways we have helped foster a culture of inclusion to ensure that employees can bring their full authentic selves to work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Equal Pay for Equal Work<\/strong>: As part of our commitment to equal pay, we conducted our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/salesforce-equal-pay-assessment-update.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second equal pay assessment<\/a>. This year, we increased the scope of the assessment, evaluating salaries globally, as well as both gender and race in the U.S. This resulted in Salesforce spending $3 million \u2014 $6 million to date \u2014 to address any unexplained differences in pay. I\u2019m proud of the strong stance we\u2019ve taken as a company and of the hard work that has gone into building our approach to equal pay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Empowering Ohana Groups:\u00a0<\/strong>At Salesforce, our Ohana, which means family in Hawaiian, propels us forward. It is our employees, customers, partners, and the communities where we live and work. Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/company\/equality\/?d=cta-body-promo-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ohana Groups<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 employee-led organizations \u2014 celebrate and bring together diverse team members and their allies. Ohana Groups offer professional development and mentoring opportunities, and empower employees to be responsive equality leaders in their community. This year, we introduced our tenth Ohana Group, FaithForce, which welcomes people of all faiths \u2014 including those who don\u2019t align with a faith \u2014 in the spirit of education and understanding religious diversity. In addition, we formalized an executive sponsor program for our Ohana Groups. Our leaders partner with individual Ohana Groups to help elevate the voices within each community, champion their initiatives, and speak up on their behalf when needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Creating a Culture of Allies<\/strong>: A critical component of inclusion is creating a culture of compassion where employees support and advocate for one another.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-science-work\/201408\/feeling-the-love-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research has shown<\/a>\u00a0that this leads to greater employee satisfaction and performance. This year, we created an ally campaign to help employees stand up for underrepresented groups by asking, listening, showing up and speaking up. We\u2019ve seen the community come together in a big way, and membership to our Ohana Groups has grown as a result. Today, more than 10,000 employees \u2014 one in every three employees globally \u2014 are members of one or more Ohana Group. Equal access to a quality education and training is critical to set up the next generation for success in the future workforce. At Salesforce, we engage with our local communities by adopting schools, volunteering in classrooms, promoting STEM education, and creating job training programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, Salesforce.org, the philanthropic arm of Salesforce,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/company\/news-press\/press-releases\/2017\/09\/170912.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;a $12.2 million grant to the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), bringing the total investment in the districts to $34.7 million over the course of our 5-year partnership. As a result, SFUSD enrollment of girls in computer science has increased 2,000 percent, and enrollment of underrepresented groups in computer science has increased 6,600 percent. Our incredible employees have also committed to contributing 40,000 volunteer hours in education in the 2017-2018 school year \u2014 doing everything from school beautification projects to teaching kids to code.
