But hitting the AI jackpot \u2014 a tech-powered utopia where AI assistants supercharge worker productivity and create new opportunities everywhere \u2014 hinges on one critical element: trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From researchers and data scientists to designers and futurists, some of Salesforce\u2019s leading AI minds weigh in on why building a foundation of trust is AI\u2019s number one job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The promise of AI depends on getting trust right, and that work starts right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-great-ai-requires-an-understanding-of-humans-nbsp\"><strong>Great AI requires an understanding of humans&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People have used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/ai-history-salesforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI for years<\/a> \u2014 from unlocking phones with facial recognition and hailing a rideshare vehicle to matching with someone on a dating app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These experiences are what Kat Holmes, Salesforce\u2019s EVP and Chief Design Officer, calls \u201cmatchmaking,\u201d marrying an individual\u2019s needs with the technology\u2019s capabilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Machine intelligence and machine learning have been a key part of our society for a while and success happens when there&#8217;s a positive match with a person \u2014 a relevant result that feels like it was made for me,&#8221; she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, however, AI is in the midst of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-research-ai-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second wave<\/a>, which introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/what-is-generative-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generative AI<\/a> and far-reaching implications for business and society. It&#8217;s the moment of eye contact.<\/p>\n<cite>Kat Holmes, Salesforce\u2019s EVP and Chief Design Officer<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And then, just like with human beings, the next step to cultivating trust in AI is through continued interactions, like determining if an AI-powered output was useful or if it could be reused or improved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That becomes a reciprocal relationship between me and this technology,&#8221; she said. &#8220;After I try that first interaction the next step is being able to shape and improve that technology with my feedback. With these feedback loops, I start to build a cycle of trust that can lead to more complex and maybe more exciting scenarios down the line. People <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.uq.edu.au\/project\/trust-artificial-intelligence-global-study#:~:text=The%20University%20of%20Queensland%20and,and%20governance%2C%20across%2017%20countries.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tend to delegate their trust<\/a> to authoritative sources \u2014 for example, having confidence that their company or government has set up safeguards for a technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s one reason why Lim says it\u2019s incumbent on businesses to provide training and establish safeguards around when to use AI and when not to. \u201cThat&#8217;s the starting point for the conversation for whether employees will trust AI in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizations must also ensure that humans remain at the helm, orchestrating AI and providing oversight of the model, when and where appropriate. As part of its commitment to responsible and trusted AI, for example, Salesforce has launched several training courses on <a href=\"https:\/\/trailhead.salesforce.com\/content\/learn\/modules\/the-einstein-trust-layer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trailhead<\/a> to help users uplevel their knowledge and ability to responsibly use AI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, there\u2019s no substitute for using the technology. \u201cAs with any technology, whether it&#8217;s a tool like a fork or a hammer,\u201d Lim said, \u201ctrust is earned when a technology proves to be beneficial over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trusting AI isn\u2019t something that gets solved in a boardroom. \u201cAdapting to a changing environment isn&#8217;t something a company does,\u201d Wharton professor Adam Grant writes in <em>Think Again<\/em>, \u201cIt&#8217;s something that people do in the multitude of decisions they make every day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-ai-that-overcomes-technical-concerns\"><strong>Building AI that overcomes technical concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Human beings have always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/ai-safety-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forged new technology<\/a> to advance society, and it hasn\u2019t always been a smooth road, said Muralidhar Krishnaprasad, EVP of Engineering at Salesforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s important to recognize when these disruptive trends arise, there&#8217;s always fear of what can happen,\u201d Krishnaprasad said. \u201cBut at the same time, if you ignore it, you may not exist as a company or as a business because it&#8217;s such a disruptive change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It&#8217;s important to recognize when these disruptive trends arise, there&#8217;s always fear of what can happen&#8230; But at the same time, if you ignore it, you may not exist as a company or as a business because it&#8217;s such a disruptive change.<\/p>\n<cite>Muralidhar Krishnaprasad, EVP of Engineering at Salesforce<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To address concerns over AI hallucinations, and toxic or biased outputs, Krishnaprasad stressed the need to ensure models are grounded in high-quality data \u2014 especially when it comes to generative AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith generative AI in particular, because the whole model is built to be creative \u2014 it tries to create a lot of stuff even if it doesn&#8217;t exist,\u201d he said. \u201cIt&#8217;s really important for you to make sure, number one, start with the right data and grounding. If you&#8217;re going to ask a question, make sure you know what data you want to feed it to get the answers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Users should also understand where their data is going when using generative AI \u2014 notably, if the Large Language Model (LLM) behind the tool is capturing their data for training. \u201cGrounding is also important for security because if you give all your models to an LLM, that LLM provider is going to suck all your data and incorporate it into the model which means your data is now public domain.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To eliminate this concern, Salesforce has instituted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/09\/12\/ai-einstein-news-dreamforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zero-retention<\/a> policy, meaning no customer data is ever retained by third-party LLM providers. The company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/video\/explaining-the-einstein-gpt-trust-layer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Einstein Trust Layer<\/a>, announced in 2023, is an answer to the question, \u201cHow do I trust generative AI?\u201d In short, it masks personally identifiable information (PII) to ensure secure data doesn&#8217;t go to an LLM provider, allowing teams to benefit from generative AI without compromising their customer data.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide cluster-content
