However, only 11% say they\u2019ve fully implemented the technology, citing an array of technical and organizational challenges, led by security and data infrastructure, that must be overcome first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data, which comes from a new Salesforce survey of 150 verified CIOs of companies with 1,000 or more employees, offers a snapshot of the state of enterprise AI, along with the hurdles ahead that must be addressed as companies pursue their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/enterprise-ai-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI strategies<\/a> and ramp up their adoption of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/agentforce\/what-are-ai-agents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI agents<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-findings-include-nbsp\"><strong>Key findings include:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CIOs feel pressure to be AI experts. <\/strong>Sixty-one percent of CIOs feel they\u2019re expected to know more about AI than they do, and their peers at other companies are their top sources of information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CIOs agree that AI is a game changer, but are cautious. <\/strong>Eighty-four percent of CIOs believe AI will be as significant to businesses as the internet, but 67% are taking a more cautious approach compared to other technologies.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IT is focusing on data initiatives before leaning into AI.<\/strong> CIOs report spending a median of 20% of their budgets on data infrastructure and management, versus 5% on AI. Security or privacy threats and a lack of trusted data rank as CIOs\u2019 biggest AI fears.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Business partners must examine their AI timelines.<\/strong> Sixty-six percent of CIOs believe they\u2019ll see return on investment (ROI) from AI investments, but 68% believe their line-of-business stakeholders have unreasonable expectations for <em>when<\/em> that ROI will occur.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CIOs see a mismatch between departments when it comes to AI.<\/strong> While functions like customer service are seen as having the most AI use cases, they may be perceived as being the least prepared for the technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGenerative AI is one of the most transformative technologies of this century,\u201d said Juan Perez, CIO, Salesforce. \u201cThis research gives a glimpse at the foundations that CIOs across industries and geographies are laying in preparation for the rollout of truly transformational AI.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vidyard wp-block-embed-vidyard\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" async src=\"https:\/\/play.vidyard.com\/embed\/v4.js\"><\/script><img decoding=\"async\"  style=\"width: 100%; margin: auto; display: block;\"  class=\"vidyard-player-embed\"  src=\"https:\/\/play.vidyard.com\/PqbcktAWtkrN6RmmcQpDUQ.jpg\"  data-uuid=\"PqbcktAWtkrN6RmmcQpDUQ\"  data-v=\"4\"  data-type=\"inline\"  data-width=\"500\"  data-height=\"281\"\/>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-implementation-lags-behind-stakeholder-expectations-introducing-risk\">AI implementation lags behind stakeholder expectations, introducing risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI use is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/ai-adoption-at-work-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rapidly increasing<\/a> in the workplace as business stakeholders see opportunities for increased efficiency. In fact, 77% of CIOs say they have good or excellent executive buy-in on AI\u2019s value. Yet CIOs are concerned about their business partners\u2019 urgency, with 68% believing there are unreasonable expectations of when they\u2019ll see ROI from the technology, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large shares of business leaders across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/sales-ai-statistics-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sales<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/marketing-trends-ai-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marketing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/customer-service-statistics-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">service<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/ecommerce-trends-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ecommerce<\/a> view themselves as having \u201cfully implemented\u201d the technology into their workflows. There\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/ai-at-work-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evidence<\/a> that much of this adoption is unsanctioned, introducing significant security risks as workers send sensitive data through unsecured LLMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;<em>We don&#8217;t yet know how to use AI among the larger employee base and how to control its governance.<\/em>\u201d<br>\u2014 CIO, professional services industry, United States<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, just 11% of CIOs \u2014 with their greater technical expertise and broader view of the organization \u2014 say they&#8217;ve fully implemented AI \u2014 18 to 38 percentage points less than their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/ai-trends-for-crm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">line of business counterparts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe adoption of mass market generative AI tools by workers is ushering a new era of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cio.com\/article\/2150142\/10-ways-to-prevent-shadow-ai-disaster.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shadow AI<\/a>\u201d that highlights the urgency of implementing trusted tools,&#8221; Additionally, legacy systems and outdated infrastructure can hinder the effectiveness of AI.\u201d<\/em><br>\u2014 CIO, manufacturing industry, United States<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cWe have lots of old data centers and legacy applications that don\u2019t natively support data exchange.\u201d<\/em><br>\u2014 CIO, financial Services industry, Italy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cOur data lacks a single source of truth, and it\u2019s not timely.\u201d<\/em><br>\u2014 CIO, retail industry, India<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing that they must get their data in order before they can fully embrace AI, CIOs are currently allocating, on average, four times more budget toward data This is especially true given the novelty of AI and a lack of understanding, or even fear, of the technology across departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cThere\u2019s a lack of understanding of how AI works and consequently a lack of trust in it.
