A new live-music streaming app tracks how staying at home helps slow the spread of COVID-19.
The Business Challenge
Wunderman Thompson planned for a two-day event to bring together their clients, experts, and practitioners to help brands make a dent in culture. Everything was planned and the team was ready to execute a flawless event until stay-at-home orders were announced. The team had to pivot quickly, and the idea to create a virtual music festival came about. But they knew competitors would soon have the same idea, so they needed the technology to build this new experience fast. They also wanted to show the impact that at-home festival attendance could have on slowing the spread of COVID-19.
The App Solution
Within days, Wunderman Thompson created Sofa Sets, a virtual music festival delivered through a front-end app built on Heroku. The front-end app uses YouTube to stream the musicians’ live performances. The developers built the app in React Native and leveraged add-ons from the Heroku Elements Marketplace for load testing and autoscaling. To quantify the impact the music festival may have had on slowing the spread of COVID-19, the team created an algorithm using data from the World Health Organization and viewer location data to show the number of hospital stays reduced, ventilators spared, and lives saved over a similar period in those locations. As a result, the first Sofa Sets festival delivered an engaging experience for over 28,000 viewers.
