A hardware asset doesn’t move through these stages in isolation. Each transition changes what your team needs to know about the device, so your asset record needs to change at the same time. If a device enters your environment without complete information, or leaves without being properly retired in your system, the accuracy of your hardware inventory can quickly decline.
The procurement and disposal stages deserve particular attention because gaps at either end can undermine everything in between. Missing information when hardware enters your environment makes the asset difficult to manage later. At the other end, devices that are physically disposed of but remain active in your records can create “ghost assets,” leaving your database out of sync with reality.
