What is your biggest accomplishment in your career to date?
I used to think it was the ones I 'knew' about. And as I have gotten further along in my career, I realize that the biggest impact I have had are the ones I am unaware of until someone comes up and says something after I have given a speech or sends me a note via social media. Having given over 300 keynotes around the globe over my career, I have an opportunity to speak to a lot of people without really talking to them. Some have shared stories of how I have had an impact on them personally or professionally, and that has been an amazing and unexpected bonus to what I get to to each day.

When hiring, what skills or attributes do you value most?
A strong team player. Of course I am interested in what the person can do, what they have done as an individual, but I am almost more interested in knowing what they have done as part of a larger, cross-functional team.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Trust the process. Don't try and rush everything into your own (sometimes unrealistic) timeline.

What do you do to empower other women?
I get the opportunity to speak a lot at “Women In” events, or sit on a panel for diversity and inclusion, so I take that opportunity to pay it forward and share some of my leanings to others. I also have the honor and pleasure to be a mentor for a number of people who inspire me every day to keep pushing forward.

What advice do you have to find an ally?
Finding an ally is super important - like a mentor, I believe it has to happen organically, not forced. You may find an accidental ally along the way, someone who will champion for you when you aren't around, and be interested in you and your success. I think those are the best kind. For me, looking for an ally may not be the best piece of advice.

On risk taking...
You win or you learn, you never fail. And if you work someplace that rewards 'risk' taking, my opinion is take advantage of it.

On plans...
The best laid plans are fraught with obstacles. But it is how you deal with them that prepare you for what's ahead.

On balancing personal and work life...
There is no real 50/50 balance. It is about give and take. You just have to make sure you give yourself permission to be more focused on one or the other at certain points in your life.
