What does Chatter mean to me as an admin?
Where can I get more information?
Chatter is a brand-new way to collaborate at work. Because status information about people and important projects is automatically pushed to users, Chatter makes it easy connect with the people and information they care about most.
Chatter is already making a big difference in businesses around the world. At BCD Travel, one support rep went from closing 10 cases a day to closing 40 cases. Saatchi & Saatchi electrified the organization by getting better insight into its creative projects. Rewards Network was able to make work fun and engaging again, while giving management better insight into how the company is doing. And revenues at Schumacher Group are growing at a staggering 30% annual rate with Chatter.
Because Chatter is built on the Force.com platform, it benefits from all Salesforce security features. The sharing model and user permissions apply to Chatter, so users can see the same data they can see in the application. For example, sales users can only see their own accounts or those belonging to people below them in the role hierarchy. However, all users can see all profile information and posts.
Chatter is included at no extra cost for all editions. Chatter is also available to non-Salesforce users for $15/user/month. This paid Chatter license includes the Salesforce content library, the ideas and answers features of Salesforce CRM, read-only access to accounts and contacts, and the Force.com platform.
Most current browsers work just fine with Chatter. Internet Explorer 6 is not supported and Chatter will not work with that browser. We recommend that you upgrade any users from IE6 to a newer browser.
By activating Chatter, you automatically activate the new Salesforce skin, which was made available in the Spring '10 release. This skin will not work with IE6, so we recommend you upgrade any users still using this browser.
Chatter uses a lot of the same paradigms that you see on sites like Facebook and Twitter, however, Chatter is completely secure and completely private. At the heart of Chatter is a feed with all of the things you choose to follow, like people, groups, accounts, and opportunities. You are in control. Chatter is not an app for monitoring other social media sites, like Twitter or LinkedIn.
There are several differences:
It's both: Chatter is a feature in that it makes other applications built on Force.com better—for example, by adding feeds, profiles, and status updates. Chatter is also collaboration application in its own right that lets an entire company collaborate in a single place.
Chatter will help them collaborate on deals and projects. Because it automatically pushes updates to users, they’ll always know what's happening with important deals, projects, and information.
Once you turn on Chatter, create tabs in the application, and enable records for users to follow, it's no extra work for you. Chatter will not affect your customizations and it works with the same security rules that govern the rest of your Salesforce org.
No. Because Chatter is an org-level switch, you have to turn it on for everyone or for no one. Chatter is much better with everyone using it to share knowledge, expertise, and content.
Chatter will not break any of your customizations.
Chatter can integrate with other apps through the Chatter API, so users can see data from any custom or third-party apps you integrated with Salesforce. That means users can have updates pushed to them from SAP, Oracle, SharePoint, Google Apps, and many other apps.
Chatter will not impact the performance or uptime of your Salesforce org. You can check out security, privacy policies, and system performance at trust.salesforce.com.
Chatter Mobile is currently being piloted, so talk to your salesforce.com rep on how to participate. To see the latest features for Chatter, visit our release Web site.
Stress that Chatter is a business application that’s completely private and secure, and that is to be used only for business purposes. Remind users not to post anything they don't want their managers to see. The Chatter etiquette link lists specific do's and don'ts.
