{"id":64877,"date":"2022-09-21T10:20:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-21T17:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/?p=64877"},"modified":"2023-02-24T21:59:28","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T21:59:28","slug":"benioff-ocean-science-laboratory-donation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/uk\/news\/stories\/benioff-ocean-science-laboratory-donation\/","title":{"rendered":"Marc and Lynne Benioff Give $60M to Expand Efforts at Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today Marc and Lynne Benioff announced a significant new gift of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.ucsb.edu\/2022\/020716\/healing-our-ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$60 million<\/a><\/strong> to UC Santa Barbara, one of the world\u2019s top marine research centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These funds will expand the work of the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory (BOSL), including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.ucsb.edu\/2022\/020717\/safe-harbor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whale Safe<\/a>, an innovative whale monitoring and alert system launched today to help reduce whale deaths from ship collisions in the San Francisco Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it\u2019s important: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/salesforce-ocean-policy-actions-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Protecting the ocean and its ecosystems is critical <\/a>to the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Whale-ship collisions continue to be a leading cause of death for endangered whales. This year alone, five whales have been killed by collisions with ships in Northern California.<\/li><li>The BOSL uses science and technology to address the ocean\u2019s most pressing issues, such as whale-ship collisions, plastic pollution, and deep sea mining.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Salesforce perspective: <\/strong>This gift builds on Marc and Lynne Benioff\u2019s deep commitment to ocean sustainability, as well as Salesforce\u2019s expansive work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/news\/stories\/behind-salesforces-approach-to-nature-based-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nature-based solutions<\/a> to address climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cAround the world, our oceans and the millions of species that inhabit them are in danger from the extraordinary stress placed on them by humans.
