The survey also quantifies the average amount of time that desk workers spend on low-value tasks.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key findings:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AI use in the workplace accelerated 47% in the past quarter<\/strong>, with more than 1 in 4 (28%) UK desk workers reporting they have tried AI tools for work as of January 2024, compared with 1 in 5 as of September 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>79% of those using AI say that this technology is already improving their productivity. <\/strong>And yet, UK desk worker perceptions remain mixed, with 41% saying they\u2019re excited for AI and automation to handle tasks from their current job, 31% neutral and 28% concerned.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nearly all executives feel pressure to integrate AI tools into their organization, <\/strong>with half of all executives saying they feel a high degree of urgency to incorporate AI tools.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Desk workers at companies that have issued guidelines for how AI can be used are nearly six times more likely to have experimented with AI tools<\/strong>, compared with desk workers whose companies have no guidelines around AI usage.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UK Desk workers report spending almost hald of their time (48%) on tasks that are \u201clow value, repetitive, or lack meaningful contribution to their core job functions<\/strong>.\u201d This shows a clear opportunity for AI and automation tools to help desk workers refocus their energy away from \u201cthe work of work\u201d and toward more high-value activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>At the dawn of our new AI era, how are desk workers feeling about how AI will change the way we work? Who is using AI and automation tools today and how are these tools affecting workplace productivity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its latest survey of more than 10,000 desk workers around the globe, including the UK, the Workforce Lab from Slack, a Salesforce company, answers these questions and quantifies new trends in AI use at work. The survey finds that workplace adoption of AI tools accelerated 47% over the previous quarter, with more than 1 in 4 (28%) of UK desk workers reporting they have tried AI tools for work as of January 2024, compared with 1 in 5 as of September 2023. And 1 in 3 UK desk workers have used automation tools in their job.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those who have used AI and automation tools for work, 79%% of UK workers say that this technology is already improving their productivity. The top tasks where desk workers are seeing the most value from AI today are for writing assistance, automating workflows, and summarizing content. At the same time, 28% say that they are concerned about these tools handling common workplace tasks, and an additional 31%are in wait-and-see mode, saying their feelings are neutral.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-want-to-accelerate-ai-adoption-start-by-issuing-guidelines-for-use\"><strong>Want to accelerate AI adoption? Start by issuing guidelines for use<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A majority (81%)of UK executives feel some urgency to incorporate generative AI into their organizations, with 50% of leaders reporting a high degree of urgency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, in our survey of more than 10,000 global desk workers, close to half of UK respondents (46%)say they\u2019ve received no guidance from their leaders or organization on how to use AI tools at work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lack of instruction may be preventing employees from experimenting with AI. It\u2019s the \u2018work of work,\u2019&#8221; says Janzer. &#8220;But if the average desk worker is spending two full days each week on this \u2018work of work,\u2019 that&#8217;s a problem \u2014 and an opportunity.
