How I Used Heroku, a Networked Humidifier & Forecast.io to Survive a NYC Winter
This winter, to deal with a new, stuffier appartment, I purchased a humidifier, started checking the weather and the humidity monitor and adjusting the settings appropriately every day. ..... Until I realized that I could automate this process. Join me as I share how I went out and got a new Wifi humidity sensor, a Raspberry pi, and spun up a Heroku server that listens to feeds from the humidity sensor, weather data from forecast.io, and tells the Raspberry pi when to turn on and off the electricity flow to the humidifier. I also added a mobile-web monitoring page. This summer I might try to expand my system to include a thermostat and air conditioner, and start tracking energy usage data and maybe use Salesforce Wave to get smarter about how I manage the temp and humidity.
