When Growth Becomes an Exponential Problem
Founded in 2014 by six physicians in Fort Myers, Florida, TeleSpecialists set out to solve a simple but urgent problem: Getting healthcare specialists to patients with emergency needs faster to provide timely and quality care. Over the next 12 years, the idea of bringing specialized doctors to patients over video grew into a nationwide operation. Today, TeleSpecialists provides remote care, check-ins for hospital patients, and psychiatric care, all delivered virtually. The company is now licensed to practice in 36 states, partners with more than 450 hospitals, and employs over 200 full-time physicians.
That growth sustained at 30%+ year over year in the company's early years — quickly outpaced the tools behind it. As Chief Information Officer of TeleSpecialists, Kristi Iannucci put it, the company was "just looking for a basic customer relationship manager (CRM) replacement". But, the problem was Zoho had never been properly set up or configured for how the business had grown, and the team had no marketing automation at all, running instead on basic tools like Constant Contact. As Iannucci explained, the breaking point was a mix of an under-configured system and one clear gap they couldn't ignore any longer: "marketing automation, we knew we needed that and this is the time for us to really consider it all at once."
Every hospital partnership isn't just one relationship — it's an entire network. As Iannucci put it, "It's an exponential problem. Every time you add a physician and you add hospitals." Nicole Hernandez, VP of Finance, breaks down just how fast that math compounds.
