Tuesday night was misted with quintessential San Francisco spring weather: Cool and foggy with no visibility of the skyline. It was not the best night to view the unveiling of the tallest public art installation in the United States – with fireworks afterward. It happened, even if San Franciscans couldn’t see it.

After the day spent celebrating the grand opening of Salesforce Tower, the top six floors of the sleek 1,070-foot skyscraper came to life, shrouded by thick fog, with Bay Area artist Jim Campbell’s “Day for Night” exhibit of 11,000 LEDs displaying low-resolution, moving color imagery. On a clear night, Campbell’s installation will be visible for approximately 20 miles.
The content for the Salesforce Tower light installation will be ever changing, featuring nature scenes and other images captured by cameras around San Francisco. Campbell’s other public commissions include a 1,000-foot ceiling sculpture at the San Diego Airport.
Earlier Tuesday Salesforce CEO and Chairman Marc Benioff urged a crowd of several hundred at the grand opening ceremony to make a commitment to address homelessness and other civic problems in San Francisco.
Salesforce Tower is the tallest U.S. office building west of Chicago and the tallest building in San Francisco. Its 61st and top floor will be available to nonprofits for special events.
