More Than a Benefit: How Proactive Health Screening Saved This AE’s Life

Discover how Salesforce benefits like the Galleri test and flexible sabbaticals saved Richard Wilson’s life. Join a culture that truly values its people.
Richard Wilson was doing everything right.
A military veteran, a senior sales professional, and a self-described “gym nut,” Richard always prioritized his health. Regular checkups and an active lifestyle were his baseline. By every standard medical measure, he was in peak condition.
But cancer often hides where standard screenings don’t look.
The Push That Changed Everything
Richard’s journey didn’t start in a doctor’s office, but with a gift. His financial advisor, a firm believer that wealth is meaningless without health, gave him a Galleri® test—a multi-cancer early detection blood test developed by GRAIL.
“It stayed on my desk for about two weeks,” Richard recalls. “My wife, Barbara, finally kicked me in the butt and said, ‘Either throw it away or take it.'”
Barbara, a registered nurse, knew that Richard’s family history of colon cancer made him a candidate for extra vigilance. He took the test. A week later, he received a call from a GRAIL nurse. The results were positive.
Doctors at NYU soon confirmed the reality: Stage 3 cancer that had already spread to his lymph nodes.
As devastating as the news was, Richard felt a surprising sense of relief. He finally knew what he was up against, and more importantly, he had a head start.
“If I had waited another 6 to 12 months, it would have been too late. I’m thankful that not only did I get the test, but that my wife pushed me to take it.”
Support When It Mattered Most
The journey that followed was grueling. Richard underwent intensive radiation and chemotherapy, a process that saw his weight drop from 220 to 150 pounds and led to a near-cardiac arrest.
During the hardest months of his life, Richard found an unexpected source of stability: his career. At Salesforce, the culture is built on the idea of Ohana (family), and for Richard, that wasn’t just a corporate buzzword. While the company provided the immediate flexibility to step away, Richard chose to keep working as long as he was able.
“Salesforce gave me time to take care of myself. Whatever I needed, my team and company were there,” he says. “For me, work was my constant. It kept me grounded.”
When the time finally came that he needed to focus entirely on recovery, his leadership team didn’t just offer sympathy—they offered a solution. His manager suggested he take advantage of Salesforce’s paid leave and time off programs to take the time to fully recover.
A Mission of Awareness
Today, Richard is going into his third year cancer-free. This past year, he experienced the moment he once feared he’d miss: walking his daughter down the aisle at her wedding in St. Petersburg.
His recovery gave him his life back, but it also gave him a mission. After his diagnosis, Richard discovered something surprising: Salesforce already offered the Galleri test as an employee benefit. He had qualified for it all along, but simply hadn’t realized it was available.
Richard has now become one of GRAIL’s most recognized advocates, sharing his story at fireside chats and roundtable discussions. He wants to ensure that his colleagues don’t just have access to world-class benefits, but that they actually use them.
Why Culture Is a Health Benefit
For candidates evaluating their next career move, Richard’s story is a reminder that a benefits package is about more than just premiums and deductibles. It’s about a company’s proactive commitment to your future.
- Proactive Care: Salesforce offers the Galleri test—a simple blood draw that can detect signals for over 50 types of cancer—to eligible employees.
- Holistic Support: From mental health resources to paid sabbaticals for medical recovery, the focus is on the whole person, not just the employee.
- A Culture of Care: When life hits hard, having a team that prioritizes your well-being over a deadline is the ultimate benefit.
As Richard puts it: “Why wouldn’t I just do a simple blood test?”
