Surfer Chris Bertish: Lean Into Fear to Find Magic
One of the world’s best big wave surfers, details his experience of sailing solo across the Atlantic Ocean to raise money and awareness for Operation Smile, to help kids born with cleft lips and palates live better lives.

In this video below, Bertish, who is one of the world’s best big wave surfers, details his experience winning Mavericks on a borrowed surfboard after 40 straight hours of travel and also paddling a half SUP/half mini-boat solo across the Atlantic Ocean. He did the latter to raise money and awareness for Operation Smile to help kids born with cleft lips and palates live better lives.
“We are living through one of the biggest storms of our time,” Bertish says, drawing comparison to his 93-day experience crossing the ocean. “We have to learn not to fight it, like the ocean, you flow with it, lean into your fear.”
