Salesforce.com Delivers First Client/Service System Built Exclusively with Java

Sun ONE Portal and Identity Server the Foundation for Salesforce.com's Trusted Services

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - June 16, 2003 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW) and salesforce.com, the world leader in delivering software-as-service, today announced an expansion of their global strategic alliance to bring the advantages of sforce, the salesforce.com client/services application development builder, to enterprises via the Web using open standards. In related news, salesforce.com also announced its membership in the Liberty Alliance, an industry group dedicated to developing open standards for federated network identity (see accompanying release Salesforce.com Joins Liberty Alliance Project). Sun is a founding member of the Liberty Alliance (www.projectliberty.org).

Using the Liberty Alliance specifications, salesforce.com will become a trusted identity provider within "circles of trust" it will build and develop for partners, developer communities and customers. To build this Liberty-enabled circle of trust, salesforce.com is joining with Sun to use the Sun(TM) Open Network Environment (Sun ONE(TM)) Identity Server, the industry's first commercially available product to support the Liberty specification v1.1 and SAML. Sun's network identity technologies deliver the infrastructure foundation for circles of trust, allowing partners in the trust circle to federate identities across multiple sites and improve and enhance the user's Web experience.

With salesforce.com's launch of sforce, developers are able to create extensions to their salesforce.com CRM service. Companies can use these modules or extensions with the Sun ONE Portal Server to integrate CRM with other proposal or billing systems. Sforce developers can also use Sun ONE Portal Server for other Web services created by sforce. Thus, companies residing within salesforce.com's circle of trust will be able to publish and consume Web services as well as utilize the Liberty Alliance specification to federate identities. This solution will allow customers to integrate high-value, personalized content with corporate applications while quickly improving employee productivity.
