Chairman and CEO of salesforce.com selected by President George W. Bush for two-year term
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - May 9, 2003 - Salesforce.com®, the technology and market leader in on-demand customer relationship management (CRM), today acknowledged that President George W. Bush intends to appoint Marc Benioff to the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC). Benioff, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com, will be announced co-chair of the 25-person committee along with Edward D. Lazowska, currently the Bill and Melinda Gates Chair in Computer Science at the University of Washington, Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
PITAC was established by Executive Order and is chartered by Congress under the High-Performance Computing Act of 1991 (P. L. 102-194) and the Next Generation Internet Act of 1998 (P. L. 105-305). PITAC will help guide the Administration's efforts to accelerate the development and adoption of information technologies vital for American prosperity in the 21st century.
The members of PITAC, who are leading IT experts from industry and academia, will provide the President with expert, independent advice on maintaining America's preeminence in advanced information technologies, including such important elements of the national IT infrastructure as high-performance computing, large-scale networking, and high-assurance software and systems design.
"PITAC represents the Administration's commitment to technology innovation," said Benioff. "I am tremendously honored to have been chosen by President George W. Bush to play an integral role in this effort to maintain America's tradition of excellence in the field of information technology."
Benioff founded salesforce.com in the spring of 1999 with the intention to create information utilities that would make traditional enterprise software obsolete. A veteran of 20 years in the software industry, he has pioneered the concept of "The End Of Software," demonstrating how on-demand applications can replace traditional enterprise software through the use of the Internet.
For his visionary insight into the changing world of software and technology, Benioff was chosen as a Global Leader of Tomorrow by the members of the World Economic Forum, awarded a Computerworld Honors Laureate for his visionary use of information technology to produce positive social change and named 'Entrepreneur of the Year' by SunBridge, the leading incubator of IT startups in Japan. Prior to founding salesforce.com, Benioff spent 13 years with Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ:ORCL), holding a number of executive positions in sales, marketing, and product development. Most recently, he was a senior vice president reporting to company chairman Lawrence J. Ellison, a founding investor in salesforce.com.
