What makes something super? Often defined as “beyond the ordinary”, being super means going above and beyond the status quo. It indicates a high level of achievement and excellence in a specific area. With this as inspiration, and feedback from Trailblazers like you, we set out to supercharge the next iteration of superbadges. Here’s what’s new and a sneak peak of what’s to come.
Let’s start with a quick overview of ways to get hands-on on Trailhead, Salesforce’s free online learning platform. Superbadges are scenario-based challenges that allow you to demonstrate the skills you’ve obtained along your learning journey. Think of them as a technical milestone that proves you’re ready to implement what you learned in the real world. Superbadges are one type of hands-on learning available on Trailhead. Before jumping into a superbadge, you’ll likely learn through Trailhead modules and projects which provide step-by-step instructions to guide you through each action required to achieve a specific goal. These are a great starting point for learning new skills! Superbadges then challenge you to apply what you’ve already learned by designing and building solutions for real-world use cases without step-by-step guidance. They test your ability to think critically and solve problems, just like you would on the job. Now, let’s get into the recent and future changes to superbadges.
Greater flexibility allows you to learn your way
Updates to the superbadge security policy now allow you to collaborate to complete superbadges. Learn by yourself or learn with a group. The choice is yours! The intention of superbadges is to assess your technical skills, and now you’re allowed to leverage the Trailblazer Community to help you get unstuck. Additionally, each superbadge references Trailhead knowledge articles to help you along the way. Trailblazers are advised not to post videos or full solutions. We’ve made this change to encourage learning in a way that simulates real-world experiences and is more conducive to how you learn.
An improved learner experience on Trailhead
Prerequisites are no longer required to unlock access to superbadges. Every superbadge still has a list of recommended, not required, Trailhead learning to ensure you have the foundational expertise to set you up for success. So if you have the relevant knowledge, dive right in!
Still to come is a new webpage layout that will make superbadge expectations more clear and provide a more accessible experience. Plus, tracking your progress will be easier than ever!
A simplified taxonomy
Superbadges are no longer considered credentials. Instead, these technical skill assessments have been simplified into superbadges of similar lengths, taking about 1-3 hours to complete. All former superbadge units will be re-branded into superbadges. All former long-format (6+ hours) superbadges were retired, unless they act as a requirement for earning a certification like the Platform Developer II or JavaScript Developer. Additionally, all super sets and multiple-choice capstones were retired, and the term “super sets” is no longer used. Any retired superbadge and super sets you’ve previously earned will still be displayed on your Trailblazer profile, and all points you’ve earned will be retained.
